Alex Iwobi scored the only goal as Fulham beat Hull City 1-0 at Craven Cottage on Saturday to claim their first Premier League win of the season — and the Nigerian's strike carried a personal milestone, drawing him level with Peter Odemwingie on 36 Premier League goals.
Fulham began the afternoon bottom of the table with two points from six matches, and manager Alvaro Arbeloa under mounting pressure, as our look at the pressure building on the Spaniard after the Ipswich collapse made clear. By full-time, his side were out of the relegation zone and he had a first league win since replacing Marco Silva in July.
Iwobi Delivers the Moment Fulham Needed
The goal arrived in the 33rd minute. Hull failed to clear their lines twice, Sander Berge collected the loose ball and fed Iwobi on the edge of the area, and his low shot took a deflection off Lucas Herrington before slipping beneath goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis.
It was Iwobi's first league goal of the season, but not for a lack of trying: he had created 13 chances in his first six matches, more than any other Fulham player, without a goal or an assist to show for it. As FotMob noted, he became the first Fulham player since Bryan Ruiz in December 2012 to register at least five shots, create three chances and complete 50 passes in a single Premier League match.
The strike was his 36th Premier League goal in 327 appearances, moving him level with Odemwingie as the joint-sixth highest-scoring Nigerian in the competition's history, as Stone Reporters recorded. Iwobi already holds the record for the most Premier League appearances by a Nigerian, and he remains the first Nigerian to reach both 30 goals and 30 assists in the division.
A Nigerian Afternoon at the Cottage
Iwobi was not the only Super Eagles player on show. Calvin Bassey captained Fulham and completed the full match, while Semi Ajayi played the whole game in Hull's defence — three Nigerian internationals in a fixture ultimately decided by one of them, on a weekend when the national team's depth abroad remains a talking point, as it was when the Super Eagles squad was depleted by withdrawals earlier this season.
Fulham were good value for more than one goal. They registered 10 first-half shots and finished with 1.44 expected goals to Hull's 0.16. Iwobi was denied a second by Tzolakis in the 58th minute and later curled another effort narrowly wide, before his floated cross was headed onto the crossbar by Gonzalo Garcia in the 74th minute.
Hull, by contrast, failed to register a single shot on target — the first time they have done so in a Premier League match since 2017 — and have now gone five league games without a win. Manager Sergej Jakirovic described the display as his side's worst since he took charge.
The closing stages still brought anxiety for the home crowd. Substitute Ryan Sessegnon was sent off in the fourth minute of stoppage time for a late challenge on Robinio Vaz, leaving Fulham to defend their lead with 10 men. They held on.
What This Means for Fulham and Arbeloa
The win lifts Fulham to five points and out of the bottom three, and it buys Arbeloa time. Reports before the match suggested he had been given two games to turn results around; afterwards he praised his players' belief and character, adding on the pressure around his job: "Pressure is a privilege."
The real test is whether this becomes a run rather than a reprieve. Fulham travel to Coventry City on October 24, and a second positive result would change the conversation around Arbeloa entirely. For Hull, the slide needs arresting quickly before a bright start curdles into a relegation fight of their own.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Iwobi has quietly become one of the Premier League's most durable and productive African players, and this was the afternoon the numbers finally told the story — a match-winner, a clean sheet for his captain Bassey, and a Nigerian record shared. Fulham's season may have started six weeks late, but it started with their best player dragging them off the bottom. Can Iwobi now push past Odemwingie and make sixth place his own outright?
