The Ballon d'Or ceremony had not even begun when its own website appeared to announce the winner — three times, with three different names. Articles naming Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe and Lamine Yamal as the 2026 winner all appeared on the award's official site on Monday before being swiftly deleted, sparking confusion hours before the gala at the London Palladium.
It is the kind of blunder the biggest individual prize in football can least afford. France Football had prepared winner copy for each of the three leading contenders — standard practice for a ceremony of this scale — but all three versions went live, and screenshots spread across social media before the posts were taken down. The real winner is still to be confirmed in London on Monday night, with the ceremony under way from 8pm UK time and the winner's press conference scheduled for 10:30pm.
Three winners, one website
According to talkSPORT, the first confusion centred on Kane. An article titled 'Harry Kane wins 2026 Ballon d'Or' detailed the England captain's 61 goals for Bayern Munich last season, the European Golden Shoe, and the league and cup double he fired the German giants to. Kane also scored six goals at the World Cup as England finished third, their best performance since 1966, and a win would make him the fifth Englishman to take the prize — and the first since Michael Owen 25 years ago.
Mbappe's premature article, by contrast, praised 'consistency personified at the very highest level' and a record-breaking World Cup in which he became the tournament's all-time leading scorer with 10 goals this summer. The Real Madrid forward finished as top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League last term, with 42 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions. Yamal's version went furthest of all: at just 19, it declared, he had become the youngest winner in the award's history, smashing the record held by Ronaldo Nazario, who first won it at 21. Not even Lionel Messi, the piece noted, won his first Ballon d'Or until he was 22.
What is actually known
Strip away the accidental publications and the hard facts are narrower. The three articles do, at minimum, underline what most observers already believed: Kane, Mbappe and Yamal are the three leading contenders from the 30-man shortlist, a picture we set out in our preview of tonight's showdown. talkSPORT reports its understanding that Mbappe will be named the winner — but that remains a report, not an official announcement, and neither France Football nor the Ballon d'Or organisers have confirmed any result.
The confirmed rankings from 30th to 21st were released earlier on Monday, as detailed by Sportskeeda: Sadio Mane and William Saliba are joint 29th, Bruno Fernandes sits in the bottom ten, and Gabriel Magalhaes is a surprise 21st despite helping Arsenal end their Premier League title drought. Yamal, meanwhile, is also expected to collect the Kopa Trophy for the world's best under-21 player for a third straight year, whatever happens in the main vote.
So what does it mean?
For the organisers, the damage is reputational rather than decisive: three prepared articles leaking is an embarrassment, not proof of the result, and any claim that the winner has been 'revealed' goes beyond the evidence. For the three contenders, the cases could hardly be closer — Kane's season-long scoring, set out when Declan Rice called him the clear winner, against Mbappe's World Cup summer and Yamal's title-winning year with Barcelona and Spain. In a World Cup year, voters have often rewarded the summer. Tonight, in London, we finally find out if they have done it again.
Beyond the Final Whistle: This was an avoidable own goal on the biggest individual night of the football calendar. Publishing three different 'winners' does not tell us who has won — it tells us how tight the vote is expected to be, and how badly the ceremony now needs a clean, undisputed announcement to restore trust in the result. Our verdict: ignore the screenshots, wait for the envelope. If talkSPORT's understanding proves right and Mbappe takes it, the World Cup will have beaten the season — and Kane's 61 goals will become the hardest-luck story in Ballon d'Or history.
