Castello Lukeba has fired the starting gun on next summer's biggest defensive transfer battle. The RB Leipzig centre-back has changed agents, put Barcelona at the top of his wish list, and left Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich all watching a release clause that drops to €65 million in June 2027.
The 23-year-old Frenchman has left BS Group International to join Excellence Sport Nation, the agency that also represents Barcelona defender Jules Kounde. As Sport Witness reports, citing Sky Germany journalist Philipp Hinze, a change of agent is usually the prelude to big transfer window plans — and Lukeba is ready to make his move.
Lukeba was already prepared to leave Leipzig last summer, but a deal failed to materialise. This time, the groundwork is being laid early. According to Hinze, the defender wants to take the next step in his career, join a top club and earn a regular call-up to the France national team. He has already broken into the senior setup, and a move to one of Europe's elite would cement his place.
Barcelona lead the chase
Barcelona are Lukeba's dream destination, and the Catalan club are already doing their homework. Barca Universal reports that Lukeba's new representative met Barcelona sporting director Deco towards the end of October, with the Frenchman's situation and a potential transfer discussed — giving Barcelona a clear picture of the financial conditions of a possible deal.
The appeal is obvious. Lukeba is left-footed, comfortable carrying the ball out from the back, and at 23 he fits the profile Barcelona want to build around. Reports in Spain suggest the club could reshape their defence next summer, and the Frenchman's preference for Spain gives the Blaugrana encouragement despite the competition from England.
There is also room for a deal to be done. While Lukeba's release clause is set at €80 million, it falls to €65 million in June 2027, and Leipzig could even consider a fee slightly below the clause with favourable payment terms — a structure similar to the one Barcelona negotiated for Dani Olmo. Any January move, however, has been ruled out: Leipzig will not sell midway through the season.
The Premier League queue
Barcelona are not alone. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United were all keen on Lukeba last summer, with Sport Witness reporting in an exclusive that all three were eyeing a move. Arsenal were first to show their hand, sending scouts to watch him in action, before sources confirmed United and Liverpool had joined the race.
The same sources made clear Lukeba would be interested in a Premier League switch — but only for the right project, with development and minutes at the heart of his decision. That puts the three English giants in very different positions. Arsenal can offer a title challenge and Champions League football, but their defensive depth would make minutes hard to guarantee. Liverpool are rebuilding their back line as Virgil van Dijk enters the latter days of his career. Manchester United desperately need new centre-backs, and Lukeba would walk into their team — if he fancies the project.
Chelsea and Bayern Munich have also been mentioned among the clubs monitoring his situation, according to journalist Ekrem Konur, setting up a genuine multi-club battle for one of the most coveted young defenders in Europe.
So what
The numbers explain why this race is already running. Leipzig need to generate more than €100 million in gross transfer revenue again next summer, and failure to reach the Champions League would only increase that figure. Lukeba, under contract until 2029 and the man Leipzig signed to replace Josko Gvardiol, is therefore a strong candidate to leave — and the falling clause makes him attainable.
For the chasing pack, the timing is everything. Nobody can move in January, so the next seven months become a long audition: Barcelona must show they can fund a €65 million deal, the Premier League trio must show Lukeba the project he wants, and Leipzig must decide whether to cash in or fight to keep their defensive cornerstone.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Lukeba has done everything except say it out loud — the agent change, the Deco meeting, the dream-club talk. This is a player who has already chosen his direction, and the only real question is who meets Leipzig's price first. Barcelona lead today, but a bidding war between five of Europe's biggest clubs is exactly how a €65 million clause turns into a much bigger fee. The race is on, and it will define next summer's window.
