Chelsea have been offered the Aston Villa goalkeeper and are considering whether to make a late move for the Argentina international. Discussions with Martínez’s representatives have also been reported as the Blues assess their goalkeeping options.
It represents an interesting change of direction for a club that appeared prepared to begin Xabi Alonso’s first season with Robert Sánchez as the established No.1 and highly rated Mike Penders developing behind him.
But Chelsea’s dramatic 3–2 victory over Fulham brought the goalkeeper debate straight back into focus.

What Would Martínez Mean for Mike Penders?
This may actually be the most interesting part of the potential transfer.
Chelsea have invested considerable faith in Mike Penders.
Signing Martínez doesn’t necessarily mean abandoning that plan.

Rather than placing immediate pressure on a young goalkeeper to establish himself as Chelsea’s long-term No.1, Alonso could use Martínez as an experienced short-term solution while Penders continues developing.
Martínez could potentially provide two or three seasons of experience while Chelsea gradually prepare Penders to inherit the position.
That would create a much clearer succession plan.
The alternative is continuing with Sánchez and allowing Penders to compete for the position sooner.
Alonso must decide which route gives Chelsea the strongest chance of winning immediately without compromising their longer-term plans.
Could Martínez Strengthen Chelsea’s Title Challenge?
This is ultimately why Chelsea should seriously consider the opportunity.
The Blues already possess significant attacking quality.
Cole Palmer remains one of their most influential players, while João Pedro has taken on greater responsibility in attack.
Chelsea have also continued strengthening other areas of the squad as Alonso attempts to build a team capable of challenging England’s best.

Chelsea should not replace Robert Sánchez simply because of one difficult match against Fulham.
But the goalkeeper debate did not begin against Fulham either.
If Alonso has genuine doubts about the position and an experienced goalkeeper of Martínez’s calibre is available at a reasonable price, Chelsea should seriously consider making the move.
Martínez brings Premier League experience, leadership and the mentality of a player who has performed on football’s biggest stage.
The biggest question is whether Chelsea believe that experience is more valuable right now than continuing to trust Sánchez and gradually developing Penders.
Chelsea’s attack already looks capable of causing serious problems.
If Alonso wants to challenge for the Premier League immediately, he may decide that greater certainty behind that attack is worth pursuing.
And that could make Emiliano Martínez one of Chelsea’s most important decisions of deadline week.
