Christian Kofane, Bayer Leverkusen's 20-year-old Cameroon striker, in action in the Bundesliga

Christian Kofane has stalled contract talks with Bayer Leverkusen, putting five Premier League clubs on red alert just a month after the 20-year-old looked certain to sign a new long-term deal.

The Cameroon international striker, who joined Leverkusen in the summer of 2025, has reportedly hit the brakes on negotiations over a contract extension — and the timing could hardly be more sensitive, with Arsenal and Manchester United among the clubs circling.

The deal that was nearly done

A month ago, Kofane looked to be on the verge of committing his long-term future to Leverkusen. Talks over an extension to his current deal, which runs until 2029, were said to be close to completion, with a new agreement through 2031 and a salary rise from €1m to €4m a year on the table.

But according to the print edition oa Bf Bild, viuliNews, the talks have now hit a stumbling block — and the obstacle is neither the striker's basic salary nor a release clause. The dispute centres on the signing bonus Kofane would receive when putting pen to paper.

The report claims Kofane informally shared details of the contract negotiated by his agency, Afrosport, with other representatives, whose response was that there was room for a better deal. It remains unclear whether Leverkusen are willing to improve the bonus package after the two sides had essentially agreed the terms.

Crucially, the stalling is not being interpreted as a signal that Kofane wants to leave the BayArena. What seems clear is that he simply wants different terms — and he is using his growing leverage to get them.

A striker in form

Kofane's negotiating position has only been strengthened by his performances on the pitch. The forward has scored three goals in six appearances for Leverkusen so far this season, continuing the rapid development that convinced the Bundesliga club to pursue a new contract in the first place.

Bayer's sporting managing director Simon Rolfes had previously described him as "an extremely powerful and fast striker, technically gifted and very prolific" — and those attributes have translated into numbers that have not gone unnoticed beyond Germany.

Premier League queue forms

The contract impasse has alerted a string of Premier League suitors. Bild reports that Kofane turned down approaches from Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Everton in August — a clear indication that the striker has his sights set on a club with a higher pedigree.

Arsenal have been in contact with the striker's management since the spring, while Manchester United have recently made contact too, according to the same report. With both clubs weighing up their long-term attacking options, Kofane fits the profile of a young, high-upside forward either could look to move for.

For United, the interest makes sense in the context of an uncertain striker situation. With question marks hanging over Joshua Zirkzee's future and Benjamin Sesko's injury problems, the Red Devils' need for a young No. 9 has only grown — and Kofane's name sits alongside other targets like Tchouameni on a summer wishlist that is taking shape early.

Kofane's representative Eric Depolo has never hidden his client's value, claiming back in April that the striker was "a player worth €100m" — though any eventual fee would almost certainly land well below that headline figure.

What happens next

Leverkusen now face a decision: improve the signing bonus and lock down one of their brightest young talents, or hold firm and risk renewed competition for him down the line. With the current deal still running to 2029, the club retains significant protection — but a prolonged impasse will only intensify the Premier League interest.

One thing is clear: Kofane is in no rush. The 20-year-old remains keen to continue with Leverkusen — and with Arsenal, United and others watching, the ball is firmly in his court.

Beyond the Final Whistle: Christian Kofane's contract standoff is a masterclass in modern player power — a 20-year-old striker, three goals in six games, five Premier League clubs watching, and all the leverage in the world. Leverkusen must now decide whether to pay the bonus or watch the queue grow longer. Should the German club cave in, or is Kofane asking for too much too soon? Let us know in the comments.
