The Enzo Fernández Manchester City transfer story is threatening to become one of the defining sagas of the final days of the summer window.
Manchester City have been strongly linked with the Chelsea midfielder as Enzo Maresca continues reshaping his squad following a dramatic summer at the Etihad.
Reports suggest City remain interested in Fernández despite Chelsea placing an enormous valuation on one of their most important midfielders. Chelsea, meanwhile, have publicly played down suggestions that a departure is inevitable.
That leaves one enormous question:
Why would Chelsea even consider selling Enzo Fernández to Manchester City?
Why Manchester City Want Enzo Fernández
City’s interest makes considerable tactical sense.
Maresca knows Fernández extremely well from their time together at Chelsea.
He understands his passing range, ability to dictate possession and intelligence when receiving the ball under pressure.
More importantly, City’s midfield has undergone major reconstruction.
Rodri’s departure to Barcelona created a huge hole, while City have already invested heavily by bringing in Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille and Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest.

Adding Fernández would give Maresca another technically elite midfielder capable of controlling matches.
But Fernández shouldn’t necessarily be viewed as a direct Rodri replacement.
His greatest value could come from helping City construct an entirely different midfield.
A Bouaddi-Anderson-Fernández Midfield?
This is where the potential move becomes fascinating.
City have already spent heavily rebuilding the centre of their team.
Bouaddi brings composure, technical quality and enormous potential.
Anderson provides energy, ball progression and Premier League experience.
Fernández could provide the creative control connecting everything together.
Rather than asking one player to reproduce everything Rodri provided, Maresca could distribute those responsibilities across several midfielders.
That would represent a significant tactical evolution.
City would have youth, physicality, passing quality and positional flexibility throughout midfield.
And at 25, Fernández would still fit the long-term profile of City’s rebuild.
Why Chelsea Should Be Extremely Careful
There is another side to this transfer.
Fernández isn’t simply a valuable Chelsea player.
He is one of the most influential members of their squad.
Selling him would be controversial under almost any circumstances.
Selling him to Manchester City would be considerably more dangerous.
Chelsea have ambitions of challenging for the Premier League themselves. Strengthening a direct rival with one of their best midfielders could undermine those ambitions before the season has properly developed.
Xabi Alonso is already reshaping Chelsea following his arrival at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues beat Fulham 3–2 in their opening Premier League fixture, but the performance also demonstrated that Alonso’s team remains a work in progress.

If Chelsea genuinely believe they can challenge Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, losing Fernández would require an exceptional replacement.
The £120m Question
Money inevitably changes the conversation.
Fernández joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a British-record deal worth around £106.8 million.
Chelsea therefore have little reason to entertain an ordinary offer.
Recent reporting has suggested enormous valuations around the midfielder as speculation over City’s interest intensifies.
That creates an interesting dilemma.
At some point, almost every player has a price.
If City were prepared to offer something approaching £120m or beyond, Chelsea would have to consider the financial implications.
But accepting a huge fee is only smart business if the club can use the money effectively.
Chelsea cannot sell Fernández for an enormous profit and then discover that replacing his influence costs almost as much.
Why Maresca Could Unlock Another Version of Enzo
One factor makes City’s interest particularly intriguing.
Maresca has already coached him.
That familiarity matters.
A manager buying a player he previously worked with generally knows much more than what appears on scouting reports.
Maresca knows how Fernández trains.
He knows how he responds tactically.
And he knows what roles suit him.
Fernández’s ability to receive possession in deeper areas and progress the ball through midfield appears particularly compatible with a possession-heavy City team.
His passing could also become devastating with City’s movement ahead of him.
This would not be City buying a midfielder simply because he is famous.
There is a clear tactical argument behind the interest.
Would Enzo Fernández Want the Move?
That could ultimately decide everything.
Chelsea can place whatever valuation they want on Fernández, and City can decide whether they are prepared to meet it.
But the player’s position matters enormously.
A move to City would offer Fernández another opportunity to work with Maresca and compete in a squad being aggressively rebuilt.
However, he also holds an important position at Chelsea and remains under a long-term contract.
There is therefore no reason to describe this transfer as completed or inevitable.
As things stand, this remains a developing late-window story rather than an officially confirmed deal.
That distinction is particularly important with the deadline approaching.
Chelsea Face a Bigger Decision Than Manchester City
City’s position is relatively straightforward.
If they can acquire an elite midfielder at an acceptable price, they will strengthen.
Chelsea’s decision is much more complicated.
They must ask whether the financial benefit of selling Fernández outweighs the footballing consequences.
And they must remember exactly who wants him.
This isn’t a foreign club removing one of Chelsea’s stars from the Premier League.
It is Manchester City.
Every outstanding Fernández performance at the Etihad would therefore become a reminder of Chelsea’s decision.
That makes the valuation about more than transfer-market economics.
Chelsea would effectively need City to pay a Premier League rival premium.
Final Verdict
The Enzo Fernández Manchester City transfer makes considerable sense for Enzo Maresca.
City are building a younger midfield after Rodri’s departure, and Fernández possesses the technical qualities required to become a central part of that reconstruction.
For Chelsea, however, the calculation is far more difficult.
A gigantic offer could become impossible to ignore.
But Chelsea are supposed to be building a team capable of challenging Manchester City — not supplying City with the players needed to rebuild theirs.
Unless Fernández actively pushes for the transfer or City make an extraordinary offer, Xabi Alonso has every reason to fight to keep him.
Because sometimes the most important transfer-window decision isn’t who you sign.
It’s who you refuse to sell.

Enzo Fernández to Manchester City: Chelsea Search for Replacement as €140m Transfer Moves Closer
One of the biggest transfers of the summer could finally be approaching its conclusion.
Enzo Fernández is moving closer to Manchester City.
After weeks of speculation surrounding the Argentina international, Chelsea are now actively examining potential midfield replacements while Manchester City continue their pursuit.
The Guardian reported on Sunday that Fernández remains likely to join Manchester City before the transfer window closes, with Chelsea considering Roma midfielder Manu Koné and Monaco’s Lamine Camara among several possible replacements.
Meanwhile, Spanish outlet AS has gone significantly further.
It reports that Chelsea and Manchester City are close to completing an agreement worth approximately €140 million, with Fernández expected to sign a five-year contract through 2031, potentially including an additional-year option.
That would make this one of the biggest transfers in Premier League history.
However, until Chelsea or Manchester City officially confirm the agreement, Fernández should not yet be described as a Manchester City player.
What is increasingly clear is that this transfer is no longer simply another rumour.
Something serious is happening.
Chelsea Are Already Looking for Enzo’s Replacement
Perhaps the strongest indication that Fernández could leave Stamford Bridge is what Chelsea are doing elsewhere.
They are looking at midfielders.
The Guardian reports Roma’s Manu Koné is being considered as a potential Fernández replacement.
Chelsea also like Lamine Camara of Monaco, while their interest in Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has been well documented.
Sky Sports has similarly reported that Chelsea would consider selling Fernández if two conditions are satisfied:
Manchester City meet their valuation, and Chelsea can improve their own squad before the window closes.
That second condition is crucial.
Chelsea cannot afford to lose one of their most important midfielders without having a plan for replacing him.
With the deadline approaching, the race is now happening on two fronts.
City need Enzo.
Chelsea need his replacement.
Enzo’s Recent Chelsea Absences Have Increased the Speculation
Fernández’s team selections have also attracted attention.
He was left out of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup victory against Luton.
Xabi Alonso insisted afterwards that there was nothing disciplinary behind the decision, describing Fernández as a good professional who had continued training properly.
Sky Sports reported Alonso’s explanation was simply that other players needed minutes.
But Fernández was then absent again as Chelsea beat Brighton 4-3 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
That naturally intensified speculation surrounding his future.
Chelsea have now played consecutive matches without Fernández while Manchester City’s interest has continued.
It doesn’t prove a transfer is complete.
But combined with Chelsea’s search for a replacement, it becomes increasingly difficult to ignore.
Why Manchester City Want Enzo Fernández
Manchester City’s midfield has undergone an extraordinary transformation.
Rodri has left for Barcelona.
Nico González has joined Newcastle.
Tijjani Reijnders has departed for Al Qadsiah.
Bernardo Silva has also left after his contract expired.
That represents an enormous amount of midfield experience disappearing in one transfer window. Sky Sports identifies City’s midfield rebuild as one of the main reasons their pursuit of Fernández has intensified.
Enzo Maresca therefore needs another midfielder capable of controlling matches at the highest level.
Fernández fits.
He is technically secure.
He can progress possession.
He can break defensive lines with his passing.
He can operate deeper or advance into attacking positions.
And crucially, Maresca already knows him.
Maresca Already Knows Exactly What Enzo Can Do
This is an important part of the story.
Manchester City aren’t gambling on a midfielder their manager has only watched from a distance.
Maresca worked with Fernández at Chelsea.
He understands his strengths.
He knows his personality.
He knows how he trains.
And he understands exactly how Fernández could function within his tactical system.
That familiarity reduces some of the uncertainty normally associated with such an enormous transfer.
If City eventually spend well over £100m on Fernández, it will be because Maresca believes the Argentine can become one of the foundations of his new Manchester City.
Enzo Would Not Be a Direct Rodri Replacement
This distinction matters.
Fernández is not Rodri.
Their profiles are different.
Rodri specialised in controlling the base of midfield, protecting City’s defensive structure and dictating possession from deeper positions.
Fernández is more adventurous.
He can dictate play from deep but also wants to advance.
His passing can accelerate attacks.
And he can contribute much closer to the opposition penalty area.
That means Maresca would probably need to construct his midfield differently.

They have also invested heavily in Elliot Anderson.
Adding Fernández would give Maresca several complementary midfield profiles rather than attempting to find one player capable of becoming another Rodri.
That could actually make Manchester City less predictable.
Is €140 Million Too Much for Enzo Fernández?
This will divide supporters.
Chelsea originally signed Fernández from Benfica for approximately £107m in 2023.
Earlier this month, Chelsea had agreed with Fernández’s representatives that he could leave for £120m if City made an offer before an August 14 deadline.
City didn’t.
But Chelsea’s position subsequently softened, with Sky Sports reporting that they remained prepared to sell for the right price.
Now AS reports a potential agreement around €140m.
If accurate, Chelsea would recover an enormous fee for the midfielder.
From a pure financial perspective, that would be difficult to reject.
But football decisions cannot be judged only through transfer profit.
Chelsea would also be selling one of their best players to a direct Premier League rival.
And that is where the decision becomes much more complicated.
Should Chelsea Really Strengthen Manchester City?
This is the same question Liverpool face with Cody Gakpo.
Selling a valuable player abroad is one thing.
Selling him to Manchester City is another.
Chelsea have ambitions of competing with City domestically.
Giving Maresca one of Chelsea’s most influential midfielders potentially makes that challenge harder.
And Fernández is only 25.
City wouldn’t be purchasing a player approaching the end of his career.
They would potentially be acquiring his prime years.
If Fernández becomes a central figure at the Etihad for the next five seasons, Chelsea supporters may eventually question whether even an enormous transfer fee justified strengthening a direct competitor.
What Losing Enzo Would Mean for Xabi Alonso
This is perhaps the most important Chelsea question.
Xabi Alonso has only recently begun building his Chelsea.
And losing Fernández would remove one of the most technically gifted midfielders available to him.
Chelsea have other options.
But replacing Fernández’s combination of passing range, creativity and Premier League experience won’t be easy.
That’s why Chelsea’s interest in Koné, Camara, Scott and Wharton matters.
The club clearly understands that a replacement would be necessary.
The Guardian reports Chelsea believe they need to improve the squad before sanctioning Fernández’s departure.
That is the correct approach.
Receiving an enormous fee is useful.
Having no time to spend it properly is not.
Chelsea’s Squad Is Changing Rapidly
Fernández would not be leaving an unchanged Chelsea squad.
The club has already undergone substantial movement this summer.
Nicolas Jackson has moved on.
Emiliano Martínez has arrived to strengthen the goalkeeping position.
And Alonso is reshaping the team according to his own tactical ideas.

Selling Fernández would accelerate that transformation.
It would also put even more pressure on Chelsea’s recruitment department to get the replacement right.
Why This Deal Could Define Manchester City’s Rebuild
City’s summer has been extraordinary.
Maresca inherited a squad moving away from the Guardiola era and has quickly begun constructing something different.
Bouaddi.
Anderson.
Allan Elias.
Potentially Cody Gakpo.
And now possibly Fernández.
This isn’t simply squad maintenance.
It is a major rebuild.
Manchester City’s midfield in particular could look almost unrecognisable compared with the team that started last season.
Fernández would become one of the biggest symbols of that transition.
Enzo’s Champions League Experience Matters Too
Manchester City aren’t rebuilding simply to challenge domestically.
European success remains a major objective.
Fernández has played at the highest levels of club and international football.
He has won the World Cup.
He understands knockout football.
And he is accustomed to carrying enormous expectations.
That experience would be valuable during City’s Champions League 2026/27 campaign.
Maresca would be getting a midfielder who doesn’t need to learn what pressure feels like.
Chelsea Have a Deadline-Day Problem
The biggest obstacle may now be time.
If Chelsea sell Fernández, they need to replace him.
But clubs know Chelsea could be receiving one of the largest transfer fees of the summer.
That weakens Chelsea’s negotiating position.
Roma can demand more for Koné.
Monaco can demand more for Camara.
Other clubs can simply refuse to sell this late.
Chelsea therefore have to coordinate two difficult negotiations almost simultaneously.
That is why their replacement search could ultimately determine whether Fernández gets his move.
Final Verdict: Enzo to City Is Closer — But Don’t Call It Done Yet
The direction of travel is becoming increasingly clear.
Manchester City want Enzo Fernández.
Chelsea are prepared to sell for the right price.
Chelsea are now actively examining potential replacements.
And Fernández has been absent from consecutive Chelsea matchday squads.
The Guardian says he remains likely to join City before the deadline, while AS reports the clubs are approaching a €140m agreement.
Those are significant developments.
But there is still a line we shouldn’t cross.
Manchester City have not officially announced Enzo Fernández.
Chelsea have not officially announced his departure.
Until that happens, this remains an advanced transfer rather than a completed one.
If the deal does cross the line, however, it will be enormous.
Chelsea would lose one of their midfield leaders.
Manchester City would add another elite player to Maresca’s rapidly changing squad.
And a transfer worth somewhere around the figures currently being reported would become one of the defining deals of the entire summer.
The next move could come very quickly.
