Estevao was meant to be Chelsea's next superstar. Instead, the 19-year-old Brazilian is yet to start a Premier League game under Xabi Alonso — and former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin now says he would not be surprised if the teenager looks to quit Stamford Bridge in January.
It is a startling fall for a player who announced himself so brightly last season. Estevao made 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and adding four assists, after joining from Palmeiras in 2025 in a deal reported at around £51 million including add-ons. This season the picture is completely different, as football.london set out on Saturday morning: seven appearances across the Premier League and Carabao Cup, just 154 minutes in total, and not a single league start.
Frozen out by the system, not by form
This is not really a story about Estevao playing badly. It is a story about a system that has no natural place for him. Alonso has built Chelsea around a 3-4-2-1 shape, with Cole Palmer and summer signing Morgan Rogers preferred as the two attacking midfielders behind the striker, and Pedro Neto often used as the advanced right wing-back.
That leaves a natural winger competing for roles that do not suit him, against two of the manager's most trusted players. The result has been brief substitute cameos and League Cup minutes — exactly the kind of stop-start development Nevin warned against when he spoke to GOAL, in comments also reported by the Sun.
"I wouldn't be surprised," Nevin said when asked whether Estevao could look elsewhere. "Your career only lasts a certain amount of time and you need a lot of games under your belt. And by the time you're 20, 21, you kind of want a couple of hundred. If you're really top level, that's who you are. You're not getting bits of games here and there, you are an established player. And it's a bit of a shame because it's not happening."
Nevin went further in the same interview, saying he loves Estevao as a player and believes he will become a great one — but questioning whether that will happen at Chelsea, where the system and the competition in his position are working against him.
So what happens next for Estevao and Chelsea?
The timing matters. Chelsea travel to Everton in Saturday's lunchtime kick-off level on 10 points with the hosts, and Alonso is already without captain Reece James after knee surgery, plus Jamie Gittens and Emmanuel Emegha. If Estevao cannot get meaningful minutes even when the squad is stretched, the January question will only grow louder.
Chelsea, though, hold the strongest card of all: Estevao is under contract until 2033. They do not have to sell, and they certainly do not have to sell cheaply. That makes a loan — in the Premier League or to a top side in Spain, France or Germany, the leagues Nevin has previously suggested would suit him — far more plausible than a permanent exit, unless a huge offer arrives. The Blues are also still being linked with other expensive midfield targets for January, with Bournemouth's Alex Scott among them, which would only deepen the squeeze on attacking places.
For Estevao himself, the next ten weeks are decisive. A run of starts, or even one big Premier League moment off the bench, changes the conversation completely. Another two months of cameos, and a player Brazil expected to build around will have every reason to ask his club for a move — at least temporarily — to save a season that is drifting away from him.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Chelsea cannot have it both ways. You do not spend a fortune on one of the most exciting teenagers in world football, tie him to a contract until 2033, and then leave him watching a system that does not need him. Either Alonso finds a role for Estevao — and Everton away, with injuries biting, is the perfect place to start — or a January loan stops being speculation and becomes the sensible decision for everyone. Great players are made by games, not by potential, and right now Chelsea are wasting both.
