The Fermín López story will not go away. Chelsea are preparing another attempt to prise the Barcelona midfielder out of Catalonia, with reports in Spain claiming the Blues are ready to put more than €100 million on the table — and this time Manchester United are circling the same player. It is shaping up to be one of the defining transfer battles of the January window.
According to Catalan outlet El Nacional, Chelsea have not given up on the 23-year-old Spain international and are readying a fresh offer in excess of €100m, with some relays of the report putting the planned bid closer to €120m. LiveScore's roundup of the Spanish reports says the Blues are set to "go all out" for Fermín, while Football-Talk reports that United have joined Chelsea in the race for a new number 10, with both clubs willing to pay close to £100m for his services.
Why Alonso wants him
The logic at Stamford Bridge is easy to follow. Chelsea sold Enzo Fernández to Manchester City in a deal reported at around £125m, and Xabi Alonso has personally given the green light to Fermín as the man to rebuild his midfield around. The La Masia graduate is the complete modern midfielder — he presses relentlessly, arrives late in the box, and scores goals: 10 goals and 10 assists already this season, numbers that have pushed his Transfermarkt valuation to €110m. Alonso is not the only Chelsea manager building January plans, either — across the division, United have drawn up their own January shortlist after the Sesko injury blow, which underlines how seriously both clubs are taking the winter window.
He has said no before
There is, however, a very large obstacle, and his name is Fermín López. Chelsea have been here before: a deadline-day bid worth around €40m in the summer of 2025 went nowhere, Marca reported that an informal offer emailed to sporting director Deco was dismissed as "ridiculous", and the player himself closed the door in public. "My priority has always been to be at Barcelona," he told Mundo Deportivo. "I arrived here at 12 years old. It was my dream to be here." He has since signed a contract extension running to 2031, and Hansi Flick — who calls him "special" — has no wish to sell a homegrown midfielder in the form of his life.
So what — can Barça afford to refuse?
That is the question that keeps this story alive. Barcelona's finances remain fragile, and with Dani Olmo in form in the same position, a nine-figure offer for a player who cost nothing is the kind of temptation the club's accountants dream about — even if the fans and the coach dread it. For Chelsea, the pursuit also fits a pattern Alonso's critics are watching closely: a manager ready to spend a fortune on new faces while one of Europe's best teenagers rots on his own bench, as we argued in the Estêvão freeze-out. Money, it seems, is easier to find than minutes.
Beyond the Final Whistle verdict: the interest is real, the money is real, but the answer, for now, is probably still no. Fermín has already turned Chelsea down once at a third of this price, he is contracted to 2031, and he is playing the best football of his career at his dream club. It will take either a bid Barcelona genuinely cannot refuse — or the player changing his mind — to move this from saga to signing. Expect both English giants to test that resolve in January. Would Fermín López be worth €100m to Chelsea, or should the money go elsewhere? Have your say in the comments.
