Gabriel Jesus appears to be heading towards a new chapter in Spain.
Barcelona have agreed a deal in principle with Arsenal worth £8.6 million (€10m) for the Brazilian forward, with the remaining details now being finalized.
According to Sky Sports, plans are being made for Jesus to travel to Spain, potentially as early as Monday, as the transfer progresses towards completion.
The move is not officially completed yet, which is an important distinction. But negotiations have reached an advanced stage and the expectation is that Jesus will complete his move before the summer transfer window closes.
For Barcelona, it represents an intriguing late-window opportunity.
For Arsenal, it could signal the end of a four-year relationship that promised plenty but was repeatedly interrupted by injuries.
Why Are Arsenal Selling Gabriel Jesus?
When Arsenal signed Jesus from Manchester City in 2022, the Brazilian was supposed to become one of the central figures in Mikel Arteta’s rebuild.
He immediately brought something different.
His movement created space. His pressing gave Arsenal greater intensity without the ball, while his technical ability allowed him to combine effectively with the attacking players around him.
But injuries ultimately changed the direction of his Arsenal career.
Jesus has suffered significant knee problems and gradually lost his position as one of Arteta’s automatic starters.
The Brazilian has scored 32 goals in 123 appearances for Arsenal since arriving from Manchester City. He made only three Premier League starts last season as his importance to the team diminished.
That helps explain why Arsenal are now prepared to move on.

Why Only £8.6 Million

Arsenal paid around £45m to sign Jesus from Manchester City.
Now they are prepared to sell him for just £8.6m.
On the surface, that represents a substantial financial loss.
However, transfer valuations aren’t determined simply by what a club originally paid.
Jesus is now 29, has suffered serious injury problems and is in the final year of his Arsenal contract.
The Times reports Arsenal had valued the striker at around £20m, meaning Barcelona’s proposed fee falls considerably below the figure Arsenal originally hoped to receive.
Arsenal therefore face a familiar transfer dilemma.
Keep the player and potentially lose greater value later, or accept a smaller fee now and create room within the squad for the next stage of the rebuild.
Barcelona clearly recognized the opportunity.
Why Barcelona Want Gabriel Jesus
Barcelona aren’t spending €10m because they expect Jesus suddenly to become Europe’s most prolific striker.
They’re buying experience, versatility and technical quality at a relatively low price.
Jesus has spent years playing at the highest level for Manchester City, Arsenal and Brazil.
He understands possession-based football.
He can drop between the lines.
He can press defenders aggressively.
And he can operate centrally or from wider attacking positions.
According to Spanish news agency EFE, Barcelona have been looking for another centre-forward and have moved aggressively for Jesus during the closing days of the transfer window.
At €10m, the financial risk is considerably lower than pursuing another £70m or £100m striker.
That could make Jesus an extremely useful addition to Hansi Flick’s squad.
What Would Gabriel Jesus Bring to Barcelona?
Jesus has never been a conventional No.9.
And that may actually be one of the reasons Barcelona want him.
His game is based heavily around movement.
He likes dropping away from centre-backs and participating in buildup play rather than remaining permanently inside the penalty area.
That can create space for attacking midfielders and wide forwards to make runs beyond him.
Barcelona traditionally demand technical security from their attacking players, particularly when opponents defend deep.
Jesus possesses that quality.
He is comfortable receiving possession in tight areas and combining quickly with teammates.
His experience could also prove important during a long campaign involving La Liga and the Champions League.
Barcelona don’t necessarily need Jesus to start every match.
They need another forward capable of giving Flick different tactical solutions.
What Does This Mean for Julián Álvarez?
This is where the story becomes particularly interesting.
Barcelona have also been heavily linked with Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez.
However, Sky Sports reports that Barcelona’s deal for Jesus should not automatically be interpreted as the end of their interest in Álvarez, describing the two situations as separate.
Spanish reporting offers additional context.
EFE says Álvarez had been Barcelona’s preferred option for the No.9 position, but Atlético Madrid’s refusal to sanction a transfer forced Barcelona to consider another solution for this window. Barcelona could nevertheless retain a longer-term interest in the Argentine.
That makes the Jesus transfer particularly clever from Barcelona’s perspective.
They can address an immediate need without committing an enormous transfer fee.
And they don’t necessarily have to abandon a future pursuit of Álvarez.

Arsenal’s Attack Is Being Reshaped
Jesus isn’t the only Arsenal attacker who could leave.
Sky Sports reports Arsenal have also agreed a £55.7m deal with Al Hilal for Gabriel Martinelli, with the Brazilian granted permission to undergo a medical.
Fábio Vieira is also heading towards Hamburg in a deal worth around £7.7m.
Three significant departures would represent a major restructuring of Arteta’s squad.
Jesus.
Martinelli.
Vieira.
If all three moves are completed, Arsenal will have created considerable squad space and generated additional transfer income.
And naturally, that creates another question:
Are Arsenal preparing for one more major attacking signing before the deadline?
With the club continuing to feature prominently in transfer speculation, that possibility cannot be ignored.
Was Gabriel Jesus a Success at Arsenal?
This question deserves more nuance than simply looking at his goals.
If we judge Jesus solely as an elite goalscorer, his Arsenal career probably fell below expectations.
32 goals in 123 appearances isn’t an extraordinary return for a striker at a club competing for major trophies.
But Jesus contributed more than goals.
His arrival helped change Arsenal’s attacking identity.
His pressing improved their intensity.
His movement created opportunities for teammates.
And his experience of winning major trophies at Manchester City arrived at a time when Arsenal were trying to transform themselves from Champions League hopefuls into genuine title contenders.
Injuries prevented him from sustaining his best form.
That will probably define how his Arsenal career is remembered.
Not as a failure.
But as a player whose influence could have been much greater without repeated physical setbacks.
Could Barcelona Be Getting a Bargain?
At £8.6m, Barcelona’s downside appears relatively limited.
If Jesus stays fit and contributes goals, assists and important performances across several competitions, the deal could quickly look like excellent business.
If injuries continue to limit him, Barcelona haven’t committed an enormous transfer fee.
That distinction matters.
Modern transfer fees for established international forwards can easily exceed £50m.
Barcelona are potentially acquiring a Brazilian international with extensive Premier League and Champions League experience for a fraction of that.
Sometimes the smartest transfer isn’t the biggest one.
It’s identifying value where another club no longer sees necessity.
Champions League Experience Could Be Crucial
Jesus also brings considerable experience in European competition.
Barcelona will once again face a demanding Champions League schedule, where squad depth can become crucial during the busiest months of the season.
The Brazilian understands those environments.
He has played knockout Champions League football and spent much of his European career competing for clubs expected to challenge for major trophies.
Barcelona will need experienced alternatives when injuries, suspensions and fixture congestion arrive.

That experience makes Jesus considerably more useful than simply looking at his recent Arsenal goal total might suggest.
What Could This Mean for the La Liga Title Race?
Jesus’ potential arrival also adds another dimension to an already fascinating Spanish title race.
Barcelona and Real Madrid are once again expected to be major contenders, while Atlético Madrid’s position — particularly surrounding Álvarez — remains fascinating.
Barcelona don’t necessarily need Jesus to become their biggest star.
They need him to make their squad deeper.

Look deeper and the logic becomes clearer.
Arsenal have a 29-year-old forward entering the final year of his contract whose importance to Arteta’s team has declined.
Barcelona see an opportunity to acquire an experienced, technically gifted and versatile attacker without committing another enormous transfer fee.
And Jesus gets the opportunity to restart his career at one of the biggest clubs in world football.
There are still formalities to complete.
Until those are finished, Gabriel Jesus should not yet be described as a Barcelona player.
What we can say is that Barcelona and Arsenal have agreed the £8.6m deal in principle and the transfer is progressing toward completion.
If everything goes according to plan, Jesus will soon exchange North London for Catalonia.
