Jadon Sancho may finally have a way back into football. The former Manchester United winger, a free agent since the summer, is in talks with Getafe after the Spanish club's president, Angel Torres, confirmed the negotiations in public this week.
Torres spoke shortly before Getafe's Conference League match in Craiova on Thursday, confirming that contact with Sancho is live again after an earlier approach a few months ago. As 101GreatGoals reported, the president expects next week to show whether the talks can be turned into a deal.
A career that needs restarting
It is hard to overstate how far Sancho's stock has fallen. United paid 73 million pounds to sign him from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, betting on one of the most productive young wingers in Europe. He never held down a place at Old Trafford, and his United years became a sequence of loans: back to Dortmund, then Chelsea, then Aston Villa last season.
When his United contract expired in June, no permanent move followed. The 26-year-old has spent the opening months of this season without a club, training away from any first team while his representatives looked for the right offer. For a player of his age and pedigree, that is an extraordinary position to be in.
Why Getafe believe they can do it
Getafe have recent practice at exactly this kind of deal. Earlier this month they signed Carvajal, the former Real Madrid captain, as a free agent — a move that needed creative financial work to satisfy La Liga's rules. Reports in Spain suggest a similar structure, with backing from the president, is being considered to make Sancho's wages fit.
Money remains the obstacle. Sancho's salary expectations are far above Getafe's normal wage structure, and he is reported to have interest from Qatar as well. Torres has also named veteran midfielder Dani Parejo as another option, as The Peoples Person noted, which underlines that Getafe are shopping in the free-agent market for experience rather than spending on fees.
There would be limits even if he signs quickly. Because the European registration deadline for the Conference League group stage has passed, Sancho would initially be a domestic option only — La Liga minutes first, Europe later.
So what does it mean?
For Getafe, the need is obvious. Jose Bordalas's side sit 14th in La Liga with eight points from eight games and host Rayo Vallecano on Monday. They are organised and hard to beat, but short of a winger who can change a tight game on his own. A fit and motivated Sancho would be the most talented attacker in the squad by a distance.
For Sancho, this is close to a last clean reset in a top-five league. Spain offers him a new audience, a manager who protects his mavericks, and a club small enough that he would play every week — the one thing Villa, Chelsea and United never gave him for long. The wider United picture shows how quickly reputations move on: the club Sancho left are dealing with their own dressing-room fallout around Martinez this week.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Getafe is the right kind of gamble for both sides. Sancho does not need another giant club and another bench; he needs 30 starts, patience and a coach who will build attacks around him. Bordalas can offer all three. If the wages can be made to fit, this could be the smartest free transfer in Spain this season — but Sancho has had fresh starts before, and this one has to be the one he actually takes.
