The Julián Álvarez Arsenal transfer story has taken another dramatic turn.
For much of the summer, Barcelona appeared to be Álvarez’s preferred destination if he left Atlético Madrid.
That route now appears effectively closed.
Atlético’s board has firmly rejected the possibility of selling the Argentina international to Barcelona following weeks of increasingly public tension between the two Spanish clubs.
Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín subsequently went even further, declaring that Álvarez would “never, ever” be transferred to Barcelona.
But there is one fascinating detail.
Atlético have not necessarily ruled out selling Álvarez to another club.
And that leaves Arsenal watching very closely.
Why Atlético Madrid Have Closed the Door on Barcelona
This transfer saga is no longer simply about money.
Barcelona have openly pursued Álvarez, with president Joan Laporta publicly discussing the club’s desire to sign the striker.
Atlético have reacted furiously.
Their board has accused Barcelona of failing to conduct the situation in a professional manner and unanimously backed the decision not to negotiate with their La Liga rivals.
That stance potentially changes the entire transfer market around Álvarez.
Barcelona had been the player’s preferred destination, according to Sky Sports, but Atlético’s refusal to negotiate means that option may no longer be realistic.
If Álvarez remains determined to leave Madrid, he may therefore have to reconsider his alternatives.
And Arsenal are among the clubs waiting.
Arsenal Suddenly Have an Opportunity
Arsenal’s interest in Álvarez is not new.
The Gunners have monitored his situation throughout the summer, while sporting director Andrea Berta’s previous relationship with Atlético Madrid gives Arsenal an interesting connection in any potential negotiations.
Sky Sports previously reported that discussions had taken place between the clubs at ownership level and communication remained open.
The problem has always been convincing Álvarez.
His preference has been Barcelona, while remaining in Spain has obvious attractions for the Argentine and his family.
But Atlético have now removed Barcelona from the equation.
That could leave Álvarez facing a much simpler decision:
Remain at Atlético Madrid or seriously consider another club.
Arsenal would hope that the opportunity to return to England and challenge for the Premier League and Champions League could change his thinking.
Arsenal Must Not Misread the Situation
There is an important distinction here.
Álvarez being unable to join Barcelona does not automatically mean he wants Arsenal.
That would be a dangerous assumption.
Sky Sports reports Arsenal still regard completing the deal as difficult and would need encouragement from the player’s side before committing themselves to serious negotiations.
That is sensible.
A transfer of this magnitude only makes sense if Álvarez genuinely wants to become an Arsenal player.
Mikel Arteta does not need a striker arriving at the Emirates disappointed because his preferred move elsewhere collapsed.
Arsenal need commitment.
If Álvarez gives them that indication, however, the equation changes considerably.
What Is Really Happening With Álvarez and Atlético?
Álvarez’s relationship with Atlético has become one of the most intriguing stories of the transfer window.
He has already publicly expressed a desire to leave Atlético and pursue what he described as his dream. Reuters reported those comments during the summer following Argentina’s World Cup campaign.
More recently, he was booed by sections of Atlético’s own support as uncertainty over his future intensified.
His absence from training has added even more speculation.
But this is where accuracy matters.
Álvarez’s recent missed training sessions were officially attributed to illness following a poor night’s sleep, rather than the striker refusing to train or attempting to force a transfer.
Those are two very different things.
The transfer situation is tense enough without turning an illness into a supposed player rebellion.
Why Álvarez Would Be Such a Major Signing for Arsenal
There is little mystery surrounding Arsenal’s interest.
Álvarez is a proven goalscorer capable of operating as a centre-forward, second striker or in different attacking positions.
He also understands Premier League football from his spell at Manchester City.
But perhaps his biggest attraction is his experience in decisive matches.
Álvarez has won the World Cup with Argentina and was part of Manchester City’s treble-winning side before moving to Atlético.
Since joining Atlético in 2024, he has recorded 49 goals and 17 assists in 107 appearances, according to Reuters.
That is the profile of a player capable of strengthening an already powerful Arsenal squad.
And after reaching last season’s Champions League final, Arsenal are no longer simply building for the future.
They are trying to win the biggest trophies now.

Adding Álvarez would make those expectations even greater.
But What About Viktor Gyökeres?
This is where the potential transfer becomes particularly fascinating.
Arsenal already possess Viktor Gyökeres, who played a major role in their run to last season’s Champions League final.
So signing Álvarez would not simply be about finding a conventional No.9.
It could give Arteta another elite attacking weapon capable of playing alongside Gyökeres, behind him or in a more fluid forward structure.
Álvarez’s movement and versatility could allow Arsenal to change shape without making substitutions.
It would also create serious competition across the forward line.
For a club competing simultaneously for the Premier League and Champions League, that depth could prove invaluable.
Atlético Still Hold the Power
Arsenal supporters should not mistake opportunity for inevitability.
Álvarez remains an Atlético Madrid player.
And Atlético have demonstrated repeatedly that they will not be pressured into accepting a deal they don’t want.
Earlier this summer they rejected significant interest in the striker, while their stance toward Barcelona shows just how firmly they are prepared to defend their position.
Any Arsenal move would therefore require an enormous financial commitment.
It would also require Álvarez himself to make his position clear.
Without that, Arsenal could spend the final days of the transfer window chasing a deal that was never realistically available.
The Andrea Berta Factor Could Be Crucial
One person could become particularly important if negotiations begin.
Andrea Berta.
Arsenal’s sporting director previously held the same position at Atlético Madrid and understands the club’s hierarchy extremely well. Sky Sports has highlighted that relationship while reporting Arsenal’s interest.
That doesn’t guarantee Arsenal a discount.
But in a complicated transfer involving enormous money, strained relationships and little time, knowing exactly who you’re negotiating with can matter.
Berta understands Atlético.
He understands Álvarez’s situation.
And he understands what would be required to get a deal done.
If Arsenal decide to move, his connections could become one of their biggest advantages.
Final Verdict: Arsenal’s Door Is Open — But Álvarez Must Walk Through It
Barcelona’s route to Julián Álvarez appears closed.
That is unquestionably positive news for Arsenal.
But it isn’t enough.
The decisive development now has to come from Álvarez himself.
If he remains determined to join Barcelona or stay in Spain, Arsenal should walk away rather than force an enormously expensive transfer.
But if the Argentine decides he is prepared to return to England, the situation becomes completely different.
Arsenal have Champions League football.
They have a squad capable of challenging for major trophies.
They have an ambitious manager.
And they have a sporting director who knows Atlético Madrid better than most.
The opportunity is there.
With the transfer deadline approaching, Arsenal must now discover whether Julián Álvarez actually wants them to take it.
