Kilmarnock Keeper Crisis: Richards Deal Collapses

Kilmarnock's short-term move for goalkeeper Dave Richards has collapsed after the English FA refused international clearance over an administrative error, deepening the club's goalkeeping crisis ahead of Saturday's trip to Rangers.

Kilmarnock target Dave Richards during his time at Dundee United

Kilmarnock's desperate search for goalkeeping cover has taken a bizarre turn after the club confirmed that Dave Richards' proposed move to Rugby Park has collapsed before it even began.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper was unveiled by the Scottish Premiership side last week on a short-term deal until January 2027. But the move was subject to international clearance — and an administrative error has torpedoed it.

Admin Error Ends Richards Move

Kilmarnock announced Richards' arrival seven days ago, with the former Dundee United and St Johnstone stopper handed the No.31 shirt and joining the squad to prepare for Saturday's trip to Rangers.

In a statement on Thursday, the club confirmed: "Kilmarnock Football Club regrets to confirm that Dave Richards' proposed move to the club has been unable to proceed. Following our announcement, which was subject to international clearance, the English FA has refused this due to an administrative error related to Dave's previous registration."

The error relates to Richards' previous registration at Kidderminster Harriers, according to reports. With his registration unable to be completed, the club had no choice but to release the keeper just days after parading him.

Keeper Crisis Deepens Before Ibrox Trip

The collapse could hardly have come at a worse time for Neil McCann's side. Kilmarnock sit bottom of the Scottish Premiership, and first-choice goalkeeper Max Stryjek is also sidelined through injury.

Richards, who came through the youth ranks at Cardiff City before forging a career in the English Football League, had been lined up to plug the gap during the extended international break. Instead, Killie must now travel to face in-form Rangers on Saturday with their goalkeeping department in turmoil.

A Rangers win would see Derek McInnes' men leapfrog Celtic into top spot ahead of Sunday's trip to Motherwell, the Scottish Sun reports — leaving Kilmarnock walking into a storm without the senior cover they thought they had secured.

What Next for Richards and Kilmarnock?

The club struck a sympathetic tone in its statement: "We share Dave's bitter disappointment about this news and thank him for his professionalism throughout. Everyone at Kilmarnock wishes him well for the future."

Richards rejected a new deal at Dundee United in the summer to seek first-team football, and he now finds himself clubless in October. Kilmarnock, meanwhile, are back to square one in their search for cover — with a trip to Ibrox looming and their season already on the ropes.

Killie are far from the only club left red-faced by the transfer market this month — the Manu Kone saga, where Roma insisted a Chelsea bid never happened, showed how quickly deals can unravel off the pitch.

Beyond the Final Whistle: Kilmarnock's plan to solve their goalkeeping crisis has been sunk by a paperwork error — and with Max Stryjek injured and a trip to Ibrox on Saturday, Neil McCann's bottom-of-the-table side could hardly be in a worse position.

Was this the most avoidable transfer collapse of the season, or simply rotten luck for Killie? Let us know in the comments.
