Kylian Mbappé gave Zinedine Zidane the perfect start to his reign as France manager—but the sight of the captain leaving the pitch injured quickly shifted attention from the result to his fitness.
France defeated Türkiye 1–0 in Kocaeli on Friday night, with Mbappé scoring the only goal in the 54th minute after being supplied by Michael Olise.
The official UEFA match report confirms that Mbappé suffered an injury during the scoring sequence and was subsequently forced off.
It was Mbappé's 67th goal for France, but his condition has now become one of the major questions facing both Zidane and Real Madrid.
Mbappé Scores — Then the Concern Begins
For France, the goal was precisely what Zidane needed.
Türkiye had made life difficult for Les Bleus, with Mike Maignan required to deny İsmail Yüksek after the restart.
Then Mbappé struck.
Olise provided the opportunity and the France captain converted in the 54th minute, giving Zidane the breakthrough in his first competitive game in charge.
But UEFA reported that Mbappé “picked up an injury in the process”, taking some of the shine off Zidane's winning debut.
The French captain left the field shortly afterwards.
For Zidane, the immediate priority now becomes determining whether this was simply a precaution or an injury serious enough to affect France's remaining Nations League fixtures.
From Illness to Injury in a Difficult Week
The injury concern follows an already disrupted international window for Mbappé.
Earlier in the week, the Real Madrid forward missed France training because of flu-like symptoms. The French Football Federation said he remained at the team's base while his teammates trained ahead of the Türkiye match.
Despite those concerns, Mbappé recovered sufficiently to start and captain France.
That made his performance particularly significant.
He didn't simply make himself available—he delivered the goal that secured Zidane's first victory.
We previously examined the uncertainty surrounding his availability in our Beyond the Final Whistle report on Mbappé missing France training before Zidane's debut.
Now the concern has changed from illness to injury.
Zidane Cannot Afford to Take Chances
France's schedule gives Zidane little recovery time.
According to UEFA's official France Nations League schedule, Les Bleus travel to Brussels to face Belgium on September 28, before hosting Italy on October 2 and Belgium on October 5.
That makes Mbappé's fitness a significant issue.
There is little reason for France to gamble with their captain if medical assessments reveal anything more than a minor problem.
Zidane has considerable attacking quality available, but replacing Mbappé isn't simply about finding another forward.
His pace changes how opponents defend.
His movement creates space for players such as Olise, Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué.
And his goals remain central to France's attack.
Mbappé Is Already Central to Zidane's France
The relationship between Zidane and Mbappé was one of the major stories surrounding the new France era even before the first ball was kicked.
Mbappé described being coached by Zidane for France as “like a movie”, reflecting on his long-standing admiration for the former Real Madrid manager. Zidane also confirmed that Mbappé would remain France captain.
Their first competitive match together could hardly have produced a more symbolic winner.
Zidane needed a goal.
Mbappé provided it.
The bigger concern is whether that decisive moment has come at a physical cost.
Real Madrid Will Be Watching Closely
The situation will inevitably concern Real Madrid as well.
Mbappé remains one of the club's most important attacking players, and the European season is still at an early stage.
UEFA's player profile confirms Mbappé has already started Real Madrid's Champions League campaign this season, recording a goal in his opening European appearance.
Any extended absence would therefore affect far more than France's Nations League campaign.
That is why the next medical update matters.
At this stage, UEFA has confirmed the injury, but there is not yet enough authoritative information to describe its severity or give a recovery timetable.
Until France or Real Madrid provides further medical information, suggestions of a lengthy absence should be treated cautiously.
France Showed They Can Win a Difficult Match
The injury shouldn't completely overshadow what France accomplished in Türkiye.
Zidane's first game was never going to be straightforward.
Türkiye created problems and threatened an equaliser, while France had to remain disciplined after taking the lead.
Jules Koundé nearly doubled the advantage before Türkiye goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır was dismissed late in the match.
France ultimately protected their 1–0 advantage and gave Zidane three points at the beginning of his managerial tenure. UEFA highlighted Zidane among the new national-team coaches who made winning starts on the opening Nations League matchday.
For a manager beginning a new era, winning an awkward away fixture represents a useful foundation.
But Zidane's attention will now quickly turn towards the health of his captain.
What Happens Next?
France face Belgium in Brussels on Monday.
That creates a short turnaround and makes Mbappé's recovery the immediate storyline to follow.
The key question isn't whether France can play without him. Their squad contains enough attacking talent to remain dangerous.
The question is whether Zidane should risk him at all.
If the injury is minor, France may still decide that protecting their captain is more important than pushing him through another Nations League match only three days after Türkiye.
If further assessment reveals something more significant, attention will immediately shift toward how many matches Mbappé could miss for Real Madrid.
For now, however, there is an important distinction between what is known and what is speculation:
Mbappé was injured while scoring against Türkiye. The severity of that injury has not yet been officially established.
That is the line Beyond the Final Whistle will maintain until further medical information emerges.
Beyond the Final Whistle, Zidane could hardly have asked for a better competitive start than an away victory delivered by his captain. But Mbappé leaving injured transforms France's next few days from celebration into uncertainty. The goal demonstrated exactly why the forward remains indispensable; the injury demonstrated why both France and Real Madrid will be desperate to protect him.
Should Zidane rest Mbappé against Belgium regardless of the medical assessment, or should France's captain return immediately if cleared to play? Join the conversation on Beyond the Final Whistle.
