Prince Adu's 10th-minute goal gave Viktoria Plzeň their first Europa League win of the season, a 1-0 victory at Lillestrøm that leaves the Norwegians winless and rooted on a single point after four matches. The Ghanaian striker finished from Patrik Hrošovský's pass inside the opening quarter of an hour, and Plzeň — pointless after three games — defended the lead through a second half in which goalkeeper Pontus Dahlberg kept the hosts in it at the other end.
Adu strikes early as Plzeň finally click
This was a meeting of two sides desperate for a first win: Lillestrøm had one point from three matches, Plzeň none, and both knew defeat would all but end their knockout hopes. The Czech visitors started like the team that understood the stakes better. On 10 minutes Hrošovský created the opening and Adu converted it for 1-0, as Sportradar's match record and the ESPN-fed live timeline both recorded.
Plzeň kept coming. Lukáš Červ finished with four shots, two of them on target, Amar Memić forced Dahlberg into work twice and Adam Gabriel tested the Swedish goalkeeper twice more, and by the end the visitors had produced 17 shots to Lillestrøm's nine, with 10 on target. Sampson Dweh was booked on 32 minutes as Plzeň's Liberian defender kept a lid on the home attack, while Lars Ranger's yellow card on 24 minutes was an early sign of Norwegian frustration.
For Lillestrøm, the evening carried an unwanted echo of their last home game in this competition, the 6-0 defeat by Real Sociedad that Beyond The Final Whistle covered on Matchday 3. This was never another rout — Dahlberg's nine saves saw to that — but Hans Erik Ødegaard's side again lacked the final-third quality to turn 55 per cent possession into a goal. Ranger's night ended early, the full-back withdrawn for Sturla Ottesen on 44 minutes after an injury scare.
Dahlberg keeps it close, but the equaliser never comes
Ødegaard turned to his bench after the break, introducing Thomas Lehne Olsen and Gustav Nordh on 74 minutes for Fredrik Gulbrandsen and Ylldren Ibrahimaj, and later Henrik Molvaer Melland and Frederik Elkær. The changes added energy without adding precision: Lehne Olsen had one effort blocked, Gustav Kjølstad Nyheim — booked on 87 minutes — sent two late attempts off target, and Plzeň goalkeeper Florian Wiegele, himself cautioned in stoppage time, was only seriously stretched three times all night.
Radoslav Kováč protected the lead smartly, withdrawing goalscorer Adu for Christopher Kabongo on 70 minutes and refreshing his midfield and defence in the closing stages. There were no red cards and no penalties in a game Plzeň managed professionally once in front. The result sits alongside the rest of Thursday's early Europa League action, including Crystal Palace's meeting with Hoffenheim, as the league phase reaches its halfway mark.
So what: Plzeň live again, Lillestrøm are running out of road
Plzeň move from zero points to three, and from the foot of the table into the conversation for the top 24 and a play-off place. With four league-phase matches still to play, a first win changes the arithmetic completely: one more victory and Kováč's side are suddenly chasing the play-off pack rather than staring at elimination. Adu, the Ghanaian forward who also scored in the play-off round win over Red Star Belgrade, is becoming this team's European talisman.
Lillestrøm remain on one point from four matches, with two goals scored and 10 conceded, and their margin for error has now gone. They realistically need to win at least three of their remaining four just to reach the play-off conversation, and on this evidence — no home goals in two European games at Åråsen — that looks beyond them. The domestic season will soon demand their full attention.
Beyond the Final Whistle: this is what a first European win of the season looks like when it is earned the hard way — score early, defend your box, and trust your structure. Plzeň were the better team in both areas for an hour and the more professional one for the last half hour, and in Prince Adu they have a Ghanaian striker delivering exactly when his club needs him most. Lillestrøm fought, but fighting is not enough at this level without a cutting edge. Can Plzeň now turn one win into a genuine play-off push? Let us know in the comments.
