Lincoln Red Imps pulled off one of the great European results in Gibraltarian football history, beating Hajduk Split 1-0 at Europa Sports Park thanks to an 89th-minute own goal — in a match where they managed a single shot to Hajduk's fifteen and did not win a single corner.
Some victories are earned by brilliance. This one was earned by endurance. Hajduk Split arrived in Gibraltar with a perfect record, six points from six after beating Ajax and Thun, top of the Croatian league and heavy favourites against a Lincoln side beaten by Brann and Twente in their first two league-phase matches. For 89 minutes the Croatian giants did almost everything right — except the only thing that counts.
Hajduk dominate everything except the scoreline
The pattern was set early and never really changed. Hajduk finished with 58 per cent possession, 15 shots and eight corners to Lincoln's none, according to the Sportradar match data, and the hosts' only recorded effort was off target. Khalil Fayad drove three attempts at goal, Dalisson de Almeida another three, and Michele Sego kept drifting into dangerous areas without ever finding the finish.
Lincoln's resistance was organised by captain Bernardo Lopes and centre-back Christian Rutjens, who was booked early and then defended his box as if his life depended on it. Goalkeeper Jaylan Hankins, meanwhile, had the game of his career. His finest moment came on 85 minutes, flinging himself to keep out substitute Marko Livaja's close-range effort after Abdoulie Sanyang's cross — a save that, four minutes later, would prove priceless.
Gonzalo Garcia threw on Livaja and Carlos Martin as Hajduk chased the winner that would have kept their perfect record intact, and the pressure was relentless. Lincoln manager Juan Manuel Pavon Dominguez responded by reinforcing his defence, withdrawing striker Kike Gomez for fresh legs and packing the edge of his own area. It looked like a question of whether the Imps could survive six minutes of stoppage time with a famous point. They got something better.
An own goal for the ages
On 89 minutes Lincoln finally crossed halfway with intent. Nano swung a cross towards the near post, Rutjens rose highest and his header thumped against the left upright — and as Hajduk defender Dennis Hadzikadunic tried to react, the rebound struck him and rolled into his own net. Sky Sports' commentary confirmed the own goal, and Europa Sports Park erupted.
There was still time for Fayad to fire one last effort off target and for tempers to fray, with late yellow cards for Mathieu Acapandie and Dario Maresic as Hajduk's frustration boiled over. Lincoln, who had spent the entire evening inside their own half, had beaten one of European football's famous names with one shot, no corners and a header that hit the post. Hajduk's players could barely comprehend it. In truth, neither could anyone else.
So what does it mean?
Lincoln Red Imps have their first three points of the league phase, and one of the most famous results any Gibraltarian club has ever produced — a country of around 34,000 people beating a former European Cup quarter-finalist with over a century of history. Hajduk, who beat Ajax on the opening night of this competition, stay on six points and remain well placed to reach the knockouts, but their aura of invincibility in this league phase is gone.
For Lincoln, the three points transform their campaign. A side written off as the league phase's whipping boys are now in the conversation for a play-off place, and every remaining opponent will study this match and wonder how on earth they break this team down.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Football does not always reward the better team — sometimes it rewards the braver one. Lincoln defended 15 shots, eight corners and wave after wave of pressure, then won the game with a header off a post and an own goal. That is not luck; that is a gameplan executed to perfection for 97 minutes. Is this the greatest result in Gibraltarian football history? Let us know in the comments.
