Lionel Messi is 39 years old, but football's milestones continue to fall at his feet.
The Argentine superstar scored his 100th goal for Inter Miami, reached 929 senior career goals and helped the club defeat Cruz Azul 2–0 to win the 2026 Campeones Cup on Wednesday night.
And Messi wasn't finished after scoring.
He later provided the assist for Casemiro's second goal as Inter Miami secured another piece of silverware at Nu Stadium.
According to football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano's trophy count, the victory represents Messi's 49th career trophy, extending an extraordinary collection accumulated with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and Argentina. Romano also confirmed Messi's career goals total had reached 929.
At 39, Messi is still scoring, creating and winning.
And now another extraordinary number is beginning to enter the conversation:
1,000 career goals.
Messi Scores His 100th Goal for Inter Miami
The landmark arrived in the 24th minute.
Luis Suárez delivered from the right and Messi rose to head the ball into the net, giving Inter Miami the lead and reaching 100 goals for the club in only 115 appearances.
Inter Miami officially confirmed that Messi is the first player in the club's history to score 100 goals.
His goals have come remarkably quickly:
2023 — 11 goals
2024 — 23 goals
2025 — 43 goals
2026 — 23 goals and counting
It is another remarkable achievement for a player who only arrived in Miami during the summer of 2023.
There is also a beautiful symmetry to the milestone.
Messi's Inter Miami story began against Cruz Azul in July 2023, when he announced himself with an unforgettable late free-kick.
More than three years later, the same opponent was on the pitch when he reached 100 goals for Miami.

Lionel Messi Reaches 929 Career Goals
Messi's 100th Inter Miami goal was also goal No. 929 of his senior career.
That number includes his goals for Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and Argentina.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed the 929 milestone following Messi's goal against Cruz Azul, while current reports of the match also place him on the same career total.
It leaves Messi only 71 goals away from 1,000.
Whether he plays long enough to reach that extraordinary landmark remains to be seen.
But the fact that it can even be discussed seriously at the age of 39 tells us something about his longevity.
Messi is no longer chasing records from the physical prime of his career.
He's doing it at an age when most elite footballers have already retired.
One Goal, One Assist and Another Final Decided
This wasn't simply a night about statistics.
There was a trophy to win.
After Messi gave Inter Miami the lead, Cruz Azul remained within one goal for much of the contest.
Then Messi became the creator.
In the 81st minute, his corner was headed home by Casemiro, giving Miami a 2–0 advantage and effectively securing the Campeones Cup.
Messi therefore finished the final with:
One goal. One assist. His 100th Inter Miami goal. His 929th career goal. And another trophy.
MLS confirmed Messi was directly involved in both goals as Inter Miami won a trophy for a fourth consecutive season.

Messi's 49th Trophy — Why Some Sources Say 48
There is one important detail behind the numbers currently circulating.
Fabrizio Romano counts the Campeones Cup as Messi's 49th career trophy. His tally includes Inter Miami's 2025 Eastern Conference Championship.
Inter Miami's own official account of Messi's achievements also includes the 2025 Eastern Conference title among the club's first four trophies of the Messi era.
However, MLS published a separate article describing the Campeones Cup as Messi's 48th club-and-country trophy.
That explains why supporters may currently see both 48 and 49 reported.
Using the count that includes the 2025 Eastern Conference Championship, Messi now has 49 trophies across his senior and recognised international career honours.
Regardless of the counting convention, his place among football's most decorated players is beyond dispute.
From Barcelona to Miami: An Extraordinary Trophy Collection
Messi's trophy cabinet tells the story of more than two decades at the highest level.
His Barcelona years brought 10 La Liga titles, four Champions Leagues, seven Copa del Rey trophies, three Club World Cups and numerous other honours.
He added domestic silverware with Paris Saint-Germain.
With Argentina came the prizes that had once seemed destined to elude him: the Copa América, Finalissima and, above all, the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
And the winning didn't stop when he moved to the United States.
Inter Miami's official account credits Messi with captaining the club to the 2023 Leagues Cup, 2024 Supporters' Shield, 2025 Eastern Conference title and 2025 MLS Cup before Wednesday's Campeones Cup success added another honour.

Messi Has Transformed Inter Miami
The numbers tell only part of the story.
Before Messi arrived, Inter Miami had never experienced anything resembling its current period of sustained success.
The Leagues Cup in 2023 delivered the club's first trophy.
The Supporters' Shield followed in 2024.
Then came the Eastern Conference title and MLS Cup in 2025.
Now the 2026 Campeones Cup has continued the run.
MLS says Inter Miami have collected silverware in four consecutive seasons since Messi joined the club.
Messi therefore didn't move to Miami simply to wind down his career.
He arrived and continued doing what has defined much of it:
scoring goals and winning trophies.
Can Messi Really Reach 1,000 Career Goals?
This is inevitably the next question.
929 goals.
71 remaining.
Reaching 1,000 would require remarkable longevity even by Messi's standards.
But his Inter Miami numbers demonstrate that his goalscoring ability has not disappeared.
One hundred goals in 115 appearances is an exceptional return at any stage of a career, never mind for a player approaching 40.
Messi's role may continue to evolve physically, but his intelligence, technique, movement and finishing still allow him to influence games.
The closer he moves toward 1,000, the louder the discussion will become.
Could This Affect the 2026 Ballon d'Or Conversation?
Messi's latest performance also arrives during the final stretch of the 2026 Ballon d'Or debate.
The Campeones Cup itself falls outside the main assessment period referenced in current Ballon d'Or discussion, but another decisive performance inevitably keeps Messi's name in the spotlight. MLS also reported that David Beckham used the occasion to make another public case for Messi.

There aren't many unexplored milestones left in Lionel Messi's career.
He has won the World Cup.
He has won the Champions League.
