Liverpool produced a breathtaking Champions League comeback at Anfield on Tuesday night, fighting back from 2-0 down to lead Villarreal 4-3 in the closing stages of a seven-goal thriller, with Alexis Mac Allister scoring twice and teenager Rio Ngumoha providing two assists.
Andoni Iraola had rested Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Bradley Barcola and trusted his youngsters — and for half an hour it looked a gamble that had backfired badly, before Anfield witnessed one of its great European fightbacks.
A nightmare start and a Van Dijk blunder
Liverpool were behind after just four minutes, and the goal came from a moment their captain will want to forget. Virgil van Dijk tried to head a ball over the top back to Alisson Becker, got his connection wrong, and Georges Mikautadze pounced to finish into the Kop end.
As live coverage from Liverpool.com noted, it was Van Dijk's first error leading to a goal in the Champions League since 2019. Worse followed in the 29th minute, when Sergi Cardona was played through a porous midfield to make it 2-0, with the Sun describing a Liverpool side stunned on its own ground.
Villarreal, 12th in La Liga with just two wins in nine, were suddenly dreaming of a famous result — especially with Victor Munoz already ruled out for Liverpool before kick-off, a blow we covered in our pre-match team news.
Two headers drag Liverpool level
The rescue began from a corner. In the 36th minute Mac Allister rose highest to nod in Kostas Tsimikas' delivery and halve the deficit, and Anfield sensed what was coming.
On the last action of the first half, Ngumoha lofted a ball into the box and Ronald Araujo continued his run to head home the equaliser, his momentum carrying him into the celebrating supporters in the Anfield Road End. From 2-0 down, Liverpool went in level.
Ngumoha and Wirtz complete the turnaround
Iraola sent Wirtz on for Araujo at half-time, and the second half belonged to Liverpool — and to Ngumoha. In the 65th minute the teenager beat his man, reached the touchline and cut the ball back for Mac Allister to score his second and put Liverpool ahead for the first time.
Three minutes later it was 4-2. Cody Gakpo laid the ball off and Wirtz rifled it into the bottom corner — his first goal since April. Ngumoha left to a huge ovation in the 74th minute, his two assists having turned the game.
Villarreal refused to die. Substitute Tani Oluwaseyi, set up by Ayoze Perez in the 87th minute, made it 4-3 and set up a nervy finish, but Liverpool were holding their lead as the game entered stoppage time.
What this means
A win would make it three wins from three for Liverpool and keep their perfect league-phase record intact, strengthening their push for a top-eight finish and direct passage to the last 16.
But the defensive questions will not go away. Conceding three at home, and gifting the first with a basic error, is not title-winning defending in Europe — however thrilling the recovery. Iraola's faith in Ngumoha, Trey Nyoni and Lewis Koumas was vindicated in attack, but the back line remains the concern.
Beyond the Final Whistle: This is exactly why Anfield nights endure. Liverpool were lazy, porous and 2-0 down — then Mac Allister's will and a teenager's fearlessness dragged them out of the hole. The comeback will be remembered; the defending that made it necessary should not be forgiven. Great teams win thrillers like this, but champions do not need them every week.
Was this Liverpool's best European comeback under Iraola? Let us know in the comments.
