Manchester City need a Rodri replacement, but their opening Premier League victory over Bournemouth showed why replacing one of the most influential midfielders of the modern era will involve more than simply signing another player.
City eventually secured a dramatic 2–1 victory, giving Enzo Maresca a winning start. But the performance also offered an early glimpse of the challenge facing the new manager.
Rodri is gone. Pep Guardiola is gone. And Manchester City are entering a very different era.
That makes City’s interest in Lille youngster Ayyoub Bouaddi particularly significant.

But with Rodri no longer at the Etihad, the question has changed.
Can Bouaddi really help Manchester City replace what Rodri provided?
Rodri Was More Than a Defensive Midfielder
Replacing Rodri was never going to be straightforward.
He controlled City’s tempo, protected the defence, progressed possession and gave teammates a reliable option whenever opponents pressed aggressively.
Most importantly, Rodri gave Manchester City control.

The money City received can help fund their rebuild, but replacing Rodri’s influence is a completely different challenge.
Maresca may therefore have to redesign the midfield rather than search for an identical replacement.
Why Ayyoub Bouaddi Makes Sense
Bouaddi is an intriguing option because his qualities fit the type of football Maresca wants to play.
The young midfielder is comfortable receiving possession in tight areas, can move the ball through midfield and has the positional awareness required to operate in a possession-based system.
Those characteristics could make him valuable to Manchester City.
But there is an obvious problem.
Bouaddi is still extremely young.
If City spend heavily to sign him, the transfer fee will immediately create expectations that may be unrealistic for a player still developing.
Supporters will inevitably compare him with Rodri.
That would be unfair.
Manchester City should not ask Bouaddi to become the next Rodri.
They should ask how his strengths can help create the next Manchester City midfield.
City Need a Rodri Replacement System
This could ultimately become Maresca’s solution.
Instead of asking one midfielder to perform all Rodri’s former responsibilities, City could divide them between several players.
Bouaddi could help control possession and progress the ball. Another midfielder could provide greater defensive protection, while City’s defenders and inverted full-backs could take more responsibility during build-up.
That would make replacing Rodri a collective project rather than an individual assignment.
Elliot Anderson could also become important to that approach.
A midfield combination involving Anderson and Bouaddi would provide City with youth, energy and technical ability while giving Maresca an opportunity to build something different from Guardiola’s midfield.
Different does not necessarily mean worse.
But it will require time.
What About Enzo Fernández?
City’s previous interest in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández makes the situation even more interesting.

Enzo would represent a more experienced Premier League option, while Bouaddi represents a longer-term investment.
If City prioritise Bouaddi, it could indicate that Maresca is not interested in simply recreating Guardiola’s final team.
He may be constructing a new midfield around younger players capable of developing together.
Bournemouth Was an Early Warning
City got the result they needed against Bournemouth, but the match demonstrated why midfield control will remain so important.
The Premier League can quickly punish teams that allow matches to become chaotic.

Rodri was exceptional at preventing City matches from becoming chaotic.
Now that responsibility belongs to Maresca’s system.

Final Verdict: Don’t Ask Bouaddi to Become Rodri
Ayyoub Bouaddi could become an important part of Manchester City’s future, but expecting a young midfielder to immediately reproduce Rodri’s influence would be a mistake.
Maresca’s challenge is bigger than finding one replacement.
He must build a midfield capable of controlling matches without depending on one player to do everything.
If Bouaddi develops alongside Anderson and City’s other midfield options, Manchester City could eventually discover something more valuable than a direct Rodri replacement.
They could discover the foundation of their next great midfield.
The Bournemouth victory gave Maresca three points.
The coming months will tell us whether he has the midfield capable of challenging for much more.
