Manchester United vs Manchester City rarely needs extra significance, but Sunday's first derby of the season arrives at an intriguing moment for both clubs.
City travel to Old Trafford with a perfect Premier League record under new manager Enzo Maresca after victories over Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Coventry City. United's opening has been much less convincing, with one win, one draw and one defeat from their first three league matches.
That makes this more than a battle for Manchester bragging rights.
For Michael Carrick, it is an opportunity to show that the progress United made last season can withstand one of the biggest tests in English football. For Maresca, it is a chance to demonstrate that City's perfect start represents something more substantial than an encouraging opening to a new era.
The official Manchester City match preview confirms that the derby takes place at Old Trafford on Sunday, September 13, with kick-off at 16:30 UK time.
And with Erling Haaland already scoring freely, United's defensive vulnerabilities could be tested more severely than at any point this season.
Here are five key battles that could decide the Manchester derby.
1. Manchester United's Defence vs Erling Haaland
This is the obvious place to start.
Haaland enters the derby in frightening form.
The Norwegian scored both goals in Manchester City's 2–0 Champions League victory away to Porto on Tuesday, taking him to five goals in his first three matches of the season.

If United are going to hurt City, Bruno Fernandes will almost certainly be central to it.
Fernandes remains the player most capable of turning a defensive situation into an attack with one pass.
United don't necessarily need to dominate possession on Sunday.
They need to make their possession dangerous.
That's where Fernandes becomes crucial.
If City commit numbers forward, spaces can appear behind their midfield. Fernandes has the vision to find runners quickly and turn a City attack into a United counterattack within seconds.

The challenge on Sunday won't simply be winning tackles.

Carrick knows what beating Manchester City at Old Trafford feels like as a manager.

Reuters reports that Carrick won 12 of his 17 Premier League matches during that interim spell before taking the job permanently.
Maresca, meanwhile, could hardly have started his City career better in terms of results.
City have won their opening three Premier League matches and followed that with a 2–0 Champions League victory at Porto.
But both managers still have something to prove.
Carrick must demonstrate that United can compete consistently against elite opposition rather than simply producing occasional big performances.
Maresca has inherited the enormous challenge of succeeding Pep Guardiola and establishing his own Manchester City side.
A Manchester derby provides both managers with an early opportunity to make a statement.
The Recovery-Time Factor Could Matter
There is another issue Carrick cannot ignore.
Manchester United play Sabah at Old Trafford in the Champions League on Thursday night, while City played Porto on Tuesday.
That gives Maresca's team two additional days of recovery before Sunday's derby.

That is a difficult balancing act.
What the Manchester Derby Means for the Title Race
It is far too early to describe any September fixture as decisive in a Premier League title race.
But Sunday's game can still tell us plenty.
Arsenal and Manchester City have both opened the Premier League campaign with three victories, while United have already dropped five points.
A City victory at Old Trafford would maintain their perfect start and strengthen the argument that Maresca's transition has been remarkably smooth.
A United victory would change the conversation around Carrick's team.
It would also provide evidence that their inconsistent opening weeks were growing pains rather than signs of a deeper problem.

Old Trafford and the emotion of a derby should make this considerably more difficult for City than their perfect record suggests.
United also proved last season that they can beat their neighbours on this ground.
But City's current form, Haaland's goals and the additional recovery time give Maresca's side the edge for me.
United's defensive vulnerability is particularly difficult to ignore when the next opponent contains one of the most ruthless finishers in world football.
I expect United to create opportunities, particularly in transition.
But if City control the midfield and give Haaland enough service, I think the visitors will eventually find a way through.
Prediction: Manchester United 1–2 Manchester City.
Beyond the Final Whistle, Sunday's derby is about more than Manchester bragging rights. It is an early examination of whether Carrick's United can turn promise into consistency—and whether Maresca's perfect City start can survive its biggest domestic test yet.
