Bologna have officially announced the signing of veteran defender Matteo Darmian on a free transfer, moving swiftly to cover the long-term injury suffered by Emil Holm on international duty.

The 36-year-old full-back, who has been a free agent since his Inter contract expired in the summer, put pen to paper on a deal running until the end of the 2026-27 season after impressing during a week-long trial with the Rossoblu. Reports suggest the contract also includes the option of a further 12 months should the defender meet performance targets.

Official: Darmian joins the Rossoblu

Bologna confirmed the deal in an official announcement this week, bringing an end to Darmian's three months as a free agent, as covered by OneFootball. The Italian defender trained with Raffaele Palladino's squad over the last week, with club staff assessing his fitness before deciding to register him for the season.

The signing was first reported by Fabrizio Romano, with talkSPORT confirming the one-year agreement, and Bologna moved quickly to make it official after Darmian convinced during his trial period.

Holm injury forced Bologna's hand

Bologna's move for Darmian was prompted by the serious injury suffered by right-back Emil Holm while away with Sweden during the September-October international break. The 26-year-old pulled up with a hamstring injury during Sweden's Nations League clash with Romania and has since undergone surgery.

Holm is expected to be sidelined for between four and six months, leaving Bologna desperately short of defensive cover and forcing the club into the market outside the transfer window for an experienced free agent.

An illustrious career rolls on

Darmian's arrival brings a wealth of experience to the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara. The versatile defender made 218 appearances across six seasons for Inter, winning three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia trophies and three Supercoppa Italiana crowns, as well as finishing as a Champions League runner-up in 2023 and 2025.

His career has also taken in spells with AC Milan, Palermo, Torino and Parma in Italy, while his four years with Manchester United saw him make 92 appearances for the Red Devils between 2015 and 2019. Like many former United men seeking new challenges abroad, Darmian chose to take his time weighing up his options after leaving San Siro, turning down interest from newly-promoted sides before accepting Bologna's trial offer. His Old Trafford exit mirrors United's ongoing defensive rebuild, covered in our piece on Dalot's future at the club.

Bologna's defensive needs were underlined by a difficult start to the 2026-27 campaign, and the club have also added Mikel Amondarain from Estudiantes to strengthen their options. The 36-year-old's ability to operate on either flank gives Palladino welcome flexibility.

What next for Bologna?

Darmian joins in time for Bologna's trip to Lecce on Sunday afternoon and could make his debut straight away given Holm's absence. The Italian international's experience in title races and European finals could prove invaluable for a squad in need of leadership.

Beyond the Final Whistle: Bologna have acted decisively to solve a defensive crisis, and Matteo Darmian's free transfer looks a shrewd piece of business. With a decorated career behind him and one last chapter to write in Serie A, the 36-year-old could be exactly the steadying presence the Rossoblu need. Can Darmian turn Bologna's season around after his Inter exit?
