Kylian Mbappé in action for Real Madrid in La Liga

Kylian Mbappé has risked the wrath of José Mourinho by posting a video of himself cycling while recovering from a knee injury — just weeks after his Real Madrid manager warned players that bike rides can end careers.

The France captain, currently sidelined with a hyperextended left knee picked up on international duty, shared an Instagram story of himself riding a bicycle on a country road, smiling and wearing a helmet, set to the 1970s Michel Fugain song The Good Guys, The Bad Guys. French media were quick to read it as a pointed response to his critics — and to his own manager.

Mourinho's stark warning

Only last month, Mourinho used cycling as his go-to example of the sacrifices demanded of elite footballers when he told the Bet It Drives show that players live their profession around the clock.

"You cannot ride a bike," Mourinho said, per ESPN. "You fall off your bike, and you don't play three matches maybe, or maybe worse, maybe you break a leg. There are a lot of things you have to give up to be a football player."

Mbappé's light-hearted clip landed days later. The timing, intentional or not, could hardly have been more provocative — the club's star player, injured, doing precisely the thing his coach publicly banned.

How the injury happened

The 27-year-old hyperextended the posterior capsule of his left knee during France's 1-0 Nations League win over Türkiye on September 25, scoring the winner early in the second half before sitting on the turf clutching his knee and limping off. France coach Zinedine Zidane was gloomy immediately afterwards: "No, it's not good. It's not good, unfortunately. He will have to go back. We will not take risks."

Real Madrid's medical department confirmed the diagnosis in an official bulletin, stressing that no operation is planned and that the injury would be monitored day by day. The French federation released him from the camp, and initial assessments suggested a two-week absence — but that timeline is now slipping.

According to Mundo Deportivo, via TribalFootball, Mbappé has been back in Madrid for five days without training, casting his availability for Saturday's La Liga visit of Villarreal into serious doubt. ESPN reports he is expected to be fit for El Clásico against Barcelona on October 25 — but that now depends on a clean next two weeks.

It is not the first time his recovery habits have drawn fire. Some Real Madrid supporters criticised him over the weekend for posting footage of himself cycling and running on a treadmill while the team laboured without him, adding a layer of tension to a season that has already been bumpier than expected.

France coping without their captain

France, at least, have been managing. Zidane's side rallied to beat Belgium 4-1 without Mbappé, and they still have Italy and another meeting with Belgium in this window. Madrid have it harder: Mbappé has been their leading scorer in the early weeks of the campaign, and his pace and finishing have already shaped results in La Liga and the Champions League group stage.

The forward also found himself at the centre of another storm this week, responding sarcastically on social media to a Radio MARCA report claiming he had asked the club to campaign harder for him in the Ballon d'Or race: "Yes, sure, and I also mistook myself for my great-aunt." It was a reminder that, injured or not, the spotlight never leaves him.

Beyond the Final Whistle: Mbappé's bike ride is either harmless fun or a cheeky dig at Mourinho — but the real concern for Real Madrid is his knee. Missing Villarreal is likely; missing El Clásico would be a disaster. Do you think Mourinho will have a word with his star player when he returns to training?
