Zinedine Zidane has waited years for the opportunity to manage France.

His first competitive match is now only days away.

But one of the biggest questions surrounding his debut has suddenly become whether his captain will be available.

Kylian Mbappé missed France's training session on Tuesday after developing flu-like symptoms, according to a Reuters report on the France captain's condition.

The Real Madrid forward remained at France's training base while the rest of Zidane's squad trained.

France face Türkiye away on Friday in their opening 2026/27 UEFA Nations League fixture.

And for Zidane, it will be much more than another international match.

It will be his first game as France head coach.

Mbappé's Absence Comes at the Worst Possible Time

There is currently an important distinction to make.

Mbappé has not been officially ruled out of the Türkiye match.

The confirmed development is that he missed Tuesday's training because of flu-like symptoms. Reuters reported that the situation has created uncertainty around his availability.

That distinction matters.

There is no reason to turn an illness into an injury crisis before France provides further information.

But the timing is clearly inconvenient.

Zidane is trying to implement his ideas with a national team for the first time, and Mbappé isn't simply another attacker in the squad.

He is France's captain and one of its principal goalscorers.

Zidane Has Already Made His Position on Mbappé Clear

One of Zidane's first major decisions after taking charge was to remove any uncertainty surrounding the captaincy.

Mbappé remains captain.

When Zidane announced his first 23-man squad on September 18, the French Football Federation confirmed Mbappé as captain.

That was significant because a new manager could have used the beginning of his tenure to reset the leadership structure.

Zidane didn't.

Instead, he immediately placed his trust in Mbappé.

The decision also reinforced something that could become central to this new France era: Zidane appears ready to build around his captain rather than simply accommodate him.

Where Does Zidane Want Mbappé to Play?

This is where the tactical story becomes particularly interesting.

Mbappé can operate centrally or from either side of the attack, but Zidane has already indicated that he likes him coming from the left.

Speaking when announcing his first squad, Zidane said Mbappé was capable of playing across the front line while specifically highlighting his effectiveness on the left. AFP reported those comments following the squad announcement.

That immediately creates one of the biggest tactical questions of the Zidane era.

Does France build around Mbappé as a centre-forward, or give him greater freedom from the left?

The answer affects far more than Mbappé.

It determines the type of striker France can select alongside him.

It influences the role of the opposite winger.

And it changes how Zidane structures his midfield behind the attack.

Against Türkiye, we were supposed to receive our first meaningful answer.

Mbappé's illness may delay it.

From Childhood Meeting to France Captain and Coach

There is another reason the Mbappé-Zidane partnership has attracted so much attention.

Their relationship stretches back years.

Mbappé recently described playing under Zidane for France as feeling like “something out of a movie.”

The France captain recalled meeting Zidane as a young teenager when the former Real Madrid manager took him to the club's training complex.

Now, years later, Zidane is his national-team coach.

Mbappé discussed that remarkable full-circle moment before the international window, as reported by Reuters.

The symbolism is difficult to miss.

Zidane was one of the defining figures of France's previous football generations.

Mbappé became one of the defining figures of the next.

Now their careers have converged.

The question is what they can accomplish together.

Zidane's France Era Finally Begins

Zidane was appointed France head coach on July 28 following the end of Didier Deschamps' long tenure.

His arrival had been anticipated for years.

As a player, Zidane was central to France winning the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

As a club manager, he achieved extraordinary success with Real Madrid, including three consecutive Champions League titles.

But international management presents a different challenge.

There are fewer training sessions.

Less time to establish tactical patterns.

Players arrive from different clubs with different responsibilities and systems.

And every competitive result carries significant weight.

UEFA's profile of the new France manager notes that Zidane had received club offers during his years away from coaching but had been waiting for the France opportunity. His first match will finally come against Türkiye on September 25.

France's Schedule Gives Zidane Little Time to Experiment

This isn't a gentle introduction.

France have four Nations League matches during this extended international period.

According to UEFA's official France fixture schedule, Les Bleus will play:

September 25: Türkiye vs France
September 28: Belgium vs France
October 2: France vs Italy
October 5: France vs Belgium

Four matches against three strong European opponents.

That makes the availability of Mbappé particularly important.

Zidane isn't beginning against a collection of low-ranked opponents where France can comfortably experiment.

Türkiye away can be difficult.

Belgium remain a major international opponent.

Italy will provide another tactical examination.

Zidane needs to establish his team quickly.

What Happens if Mbappé Cannot Start Against Türkiye?

This could provide the first glimpse of Zidane's adaptability.

France possess enormous attacking depth, so losing one player should not leave them without solutions.

But replacing Mbappé's position is much easier than replacing his influence.

His pace changes how opponents defend.

His movement can force defensive lines deeper.

His ability to attack from the left or through the middle gives France multiple ways to structure possession.

And his finishing provides something even elite squads cannot easily reproduce.

If Mbappé isn't ready, Zidane's first starting XI will therefore tell us plenty about what he values.

Does he replace Mbappé with another direct attacker?

Does he change the shape?

Or does he use the absence to build a more collective attacking structure?

Those are tactical questions worth watching.

Zidane Has Already Started Reshaping France

The captaincy isn't the only decision Zidane has made.

His first squad contained several new faces while some established internationals were omitted.

The FFF said the 23-player selection included five players receiving their first senior France call-up.

That is an important signal.

Zidane isn't simply inheriting Deschamps' France and pressing continue.

A new cycle has begun.

And after the 2026 World Cup, there is an opportunity to reconsider how France use one of the deepest talent pools in international football.

The objective will not simply be selecting the biggest names.

It will be finding balance between them.

In fact, balance was one of the themes Zidane emphasized when presenting his first squad.

The First Match Will Tell Us More Than the Result

Naturally, France will want to beat Türkiye.

But for observers, Zidane's first match provides something else.

It gives us the first evidence of what a Zidane France team actually looks like.

Will France dominate possession?

Will they attack quickly in transition?

How aggressively will the full-backs advance?

Where will Mbappé operate if he recovers?

How much freedom will Zidane give his attacking players?

His extraordinary Real Madrid record has already established his credentials as a manager.

But international football is a different environment.

Türkiye will provide the first real evidence of how Zidane intends to approach it.

Mbappé's Situation Should Be Watched, Not Exaggerated

For now, there is no need for dramatic conclusions.

Mbappé has flu-like symptoms.

He missed training.

France have not confirmed that he will miss Friday's match.

That is where the story stands.

His recovery over the next couple of days will determine whether Zidane begins his France career with his captain on the pitch.

If Mbappé returns quickly, the disruption may ultimately prove minor.

If he cannot play, Zidane will have to make his first significant tactical adjustment before he has even managed his first competitive minute for France.

Either way, his first team selection just became considerably more interesting.

Beyond the Final Whistle, Zinedine Zidane's long-awaited France era was always going to begin under enormous attention. Mbappé's illness adds an unexpected complication, but it also offers an early test of how the new coach intends to manage both his captain and France's remarkable attacking depth. The most important development now is Mbappé's recovery — and whether he is ready when Zidane names his first France XI on Friday.

If Kylian Mbappé is available against Türkiye, should Zidane build his attack around him from the left or use the France captain through the middle? Join the conversation on Beyond the Final Whistle.
