The Ayyoub Bouaddi Manchester City transfer is complete, and one of the biggest questions surrounding Enzo Maresca’s rebuild has suddenly become much more interesting.
Manchester City have officially signed the 18-year-old midfielder from Lille on a five-year contract running until 2031. The club did not disclose the transfer fee, but reports put the agreement at €95 million plus another €5 million in potential add-ons.
That is extraordinary money for a teenager.
But Manchester City aren’t simply buying potential.
They are rebuilding a midfield that has lost Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders this summer, while Nico González is also heading to Newcastle.
And that brings us back to the question we asked before the transfer was completed:
Can Bouaddi really help Manchester City replace Rodri?
From Transfer Target to £85m Investment
We previously examined Bouaddi’s suitability in Manchester City After Rodri: Is Ayyoub Bouaddi Really the Answer?.
At that point, he represented an intriguing possibility.
Now City have put serious money behind that possibility.
Bouaddi arrives having already accumulated 96 senior appearances for Lille despite being only 18. He also has eight senior Morocco caps and started five of his country’s six matches during their run to the World Cup quarter-finals this summer.
That level of experience helps explain why City have been willing to make such an enormous investment in such a young midfielder.
Why Bouaddi Fits Maresca’s Manchester City
The attraction isn’t difficult to understand.
Bouaddi is comfortable receiving possession under pressure, intelligent positionally and capable of progressing the ball from deeper areas.
Those characteristics are particularly important for Maresca.
City’s new manager wants his team to control possession and create numerical advantages during build-up. That requires midfielders who aren’t afraid to receive the ball with opponents around them.
Bouaddi has already demonstrated that composure on major stages.
During Morocco’s World Cup opener against Brazil, Manchester City’s analysis recorded him completing 91% of his passes, making six recoveries and five interceptions while winning nine duels.
Those aren’t the numbers of a teenager hiding from responsibility.
They’re precisely the qualities that make the Rodri comparisons understandable.
But Bouaddi Shouldn’t Be Asked to Become Rodri
This is where expectations need to be controlled.
Rodri wasn’t merely Manchester City’s defensive midfielder.
He controlled tempo, protected the defence, progressed possession and provided the tactical security that allowed City’s attacking players greater freedom.
Replacing all of that with an 18-year-old would be unrealistic.
Maresca has another option.
Instead of finding one new Rodri, he can construct a midfield in which several players divide those responsibilities.
City already spent £116 million on Elliot Anderson earlier this summer. Anderson can operate as a No.6 or No.8, giving Maresca another technically capable midfielder alongside Bouaddi.
A Bouaddi-Anderson partnership could therefore become the foundation of a completely different Manchester City midfield.

£85m Creates Immediate Pressure
There is nevertheless no escaping the transfer fee.
Bouaddi may be only 18, but players costing approximately £85m aren’t treated like ordinary prospects.
Every mistake will be analysed.
Every difficult match will produce questions.
And every comparison with Rodri will increase expectations.
That makes City’s handling of his development particularly important.
Bouaddi himself seems aware that he remains unfinished. In his first interview after completing the transfer, he acknowledged that he still has significant room for improvement and described City as the ideal environment for his development.
City director of football Hugo Viana similarly emphasized Bouaddi’s potential and football intelligence rather than presenting him as a finished superstar.
That is the right approach.
City’s Midfield Revolution Is Bigger Than Bouaddi
This transfer shouldn’t be viewed in isolation.
Rodri has departed for Barcelona.
Bernardo Silva and Reijnders have also gone, while González is set for Newcastle.
Bouaddi and Anderson have arrived.
And reports suggest Manchester City could still pursue Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández before the transfer window closes.
This isn’t a minor refresh.
It’s a midfield reconstruction.
That makes the coming months one of the most fascinating tests of Maresca’s Manchester City career.
We saw during City’s dramatic opening victory over Bournemouth that the team remains a work in progress.
Bouaddi gives Maresca another major piece.
Now he has to determine how all those pieces fit together.
Final Verdict: City Have Bought Potential, Not Another Rodri
Manchester City may eventually have found an exceptional midfielder in Ayyoub Bouaddi.
But judging this transfer by whether an 18-year-old immediately reproduces Rodri’s influence would be unfair.
City haven’t bought another Rodri.
They’ve bought one of Europe’s most highly rated young midfielders and given Maresca the opportunity to build something new around him.
Bouaddi’s intelligence, composure and experience suggest he has the tools to succeed.
The £85m price means patience won’t always be easy.
But if Bouaddi and Anderson eventually develop into the foundation of City’s next great midfield, Manchester City may look back on August 2026 as the moment their post-Rodri era truly began.
