Barcelona appear to have won the race for Rodri, with Manchester City accepting a £65.4 million bid for one of the most influential midfielders of his generation.
The 30-year-old has agreed to a four-year contract with Barcelona, according to Reuters, and is expected to complete the move once the remaining formalities are finalized.
For Barcelona, this is more than another big-name signing.
Rodri could become the midfield anchor around which the next phase of the team is built.
For Manchester City, however, losing him leaves a significant question: how do you replace a player who has been so important to the team’s control, balance and success?
Rodri to Barcelona: What Has Happened?
Barcelona’s pursuit of Rodri has developed rapidly.
Manchester City previously rejected lower offers for the Spain international. As recently as August 14, reports said City had turned down a £55 million bid, with the Premier League club seeking more than £60 million.
Barcelona returned to negotiations — and this time they appear to have found the breakthrough.
According to Reuters’ report on the Rodri agreement, Manchester City have accepted a £65.4 million offer.
The Guardian also reports that Rodri is set to join Barcelona after City accepted the latest bid.
The transfer is not yet the same as an official Barcelona unveiling, so until the clubs formally announce completion, it is better described as an agreed deal awaiting the final steps.
Why Manchester City Are Willing to Sell Rodri
At first glance, selling Rodri might seem surprising.
He has been central to City’s most successful period and scored perhaps the most important goal in the club’s history — the winner against Inter Milan in the 2023 Champions League final.
But the contract situation changes everything.
Rodri is entering the final year of his Manchester City contract, and City had hoped to persuade him to extend his stay.
The midfielder, however, reportedly wanted to return to Spain.
That left City facing a difficult choice.
Keep a 30-year-old player who could run down his contract, or accept a substantial offer while his transfer value remains high.
At approximately £65.4 million, City have chosen the second option.
What Rodri Gives Barcelona
This is where the transfer becomes particularly interesting.
Barcelona already possess technically gifted midfielders, but Rodri provides something different.
He can dictate the tempo from deep, protect the defence, resist pressure and give attacking players the freedom to operate further forward.
He also brings enormous experience.
Rodri spent seven seasons at Manchester City, making 298 appearances and winning 14 major honours, according to Reuters. Those included four Premier League titles and the Champions League.
Barcelona aren’t simply buying a defensive midfielder.
They’re potentially buying the player who can control the centre of the pitch in the biggest matches.
That could become particularly important in Europe.

Rodri Could Transform Barcelona’s Champions League Chances
Barcelona’s ambitions go far beyond retaining domestic supremacy.
They want to win the Champions League.
And players like Rodri are particularly valuable when knockout matches become tight.
There are games where possession alone isn’t enough. Teams need someone who recognizes danger, slows the match down when necessary and knows when to accelerate the attack.
Rodri has spent years doing exactly that at the highest level.
His arrival would therefore immediately make Barcelona an even more interesting team to watch in Europe.

They have already strengthened their midfield with Elliot Anderson, while reports have also connected City with Ayyoub Bouaddi.
The Guardian reports that City remain interested in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández as part of their midfield rebuild.
That particular situation is worth watching closely.

Rodri Leaves Manchester City as a Club Great
Whatever happens next, Rodri’s Manchester City legacy is secure.
He joined City from Atlético Madrid in 2019 and developed into one of football’s most complete midfielders.
His ability to control possession became fundamental to City’s dominance, but his defining moment will always be Istanbul.
With the 2023 Champions League final against Inter Milan locked at 0-0, Rodri scored the goal that delivered City’s first European Cup and completed the treble.
He subsequently won the 2024 Ballon d’Or.
That is the level of player Barcelona are preparing to add to their midfield.

The uncertainty surrounding Rodri’s future has now ended.
On August 18, Rodri completed his move from Manchester City to Barcelona, bringing an end to a hugely successful seven-year spell in English football.
The Spanish midfielder has signed a contract running until June 2030, completing one of the biggest transfers of the summer.
Attention now turns from whether the deal will happen to how quickly Rodri can establish himself at the heart of Barcelona’s midfield.
For Manchester City, the focus shifts firmly toward replacing a player who was fundamental to the club’s most successful era.
That could make City’s remaining activity in the transfer market particularly important before the window closes.

Beyond the Final Whistle Verdict
Barcelona signing Rodri would be one of the most significant moves of the summer.
They aren’t just adding another recognizable name. They are adding a midfielder with Premier League, Champions League and international experience who understands how to control the biggest matches.
For Manchester City, £65.4 million represents substantial value for a 30-year-old entering the final year of his contract.
But replacing his influence may prove much harder than replacing his position.
Barcelona may have found the midfield leader they wanted.
