Nico Williams has drawn a line under two years of transfer speculation, confirming he personally rejected Barcelona, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain to stay at Athletic Club — and publicly correcting his own agent in the process.
The Spain winger spoke after Athletic's 4-0 win over Getafe at San Mames on Sunday, a result he helped set in motion before being withdrawn in the 68th minute. Rather than leave his future open, Williams used the moment to close the story down completely, as reported by LiveScore via AS.
"I told everyone no"
Williams was blunt about the scale of the interest he turned away. "I have never doubted being here, I have had countless offers, I have been able to leave and I have been clear about staying here," he said.
"My intention is to be here, it cannot be doubted. To Barca, Arsenal, PSG and many more I told everyone no because I was here. I hope people understand."
That is not the language of a player keeping his options warm for January. Williams signed a new Athletic contract in July 2025 running until June 2035, with his release clause increased by more than 50 per cent, and his words on Sunday matched the paper: this was a decision made long ago, and made by him.
Williams hits back at his agent
The sharper edge of the interview was aimed at his representative, Felix Tainta, who had recently claimed Barcelona's move collapsed in 2024 because the Catalan club could not guarantee Williams' registration or his minutes amid their financial fair play problems.
Williams flatly rejected that account, as Striver also reported. "Felix was wrong with what he said; things are not like that," he said. "The final decision is made by me, my brother and the family. What happens at home, only the three of us know."
His brother Inaki Williams, Athletic's captain, had already backed that version publicly, and Nico repeated the message that social media noise does not move him: he wants to be a reference point for the children who watch him at Lezama, the club's training ground.
A night that underlined his point
On the pitch, Athletic gave their supporters a performance to match the mood. Alex Berenguer scored the opener from a free kick on 17 minutes and then created the other three goals, setting up Inaki Williams on 35 minutes, Aitor Paredes' header on 70 minutes and Yuri Berchiche's late fourth on 88 minutes. Getafe finished with ten men after Mario Martin's straight red card two minutes earlier.
Nico Williams did not score, but he did not need to. The statement of the night was made with a microphone, not a goal — and it landed on a weekend when Barcelona were absorbing an El Clasico defeat and searching for answers on their left flank.
So what does it mean?
For Arsenal and PSG, the door is not just closed, it is publicly bolted. Both clubs have been linked with Williams across successive windows, and both must now plan their wide attacking recruitment without him — just as Atletico's stance on Julian Alvarez has already forced the same pair to look elsewhere in attack.
Barcelona, for their part, have moved on since the 2024 saga, but Williams' correction of his agent still matters: it removes the convenient theory that registration problems alone stopped the transfer. By his account, even a clean offer would have met the same answer.
For Athletic, this is the Basque model working exactly as designed — a homegrown star choosing San Mames over three of Europe's richest clubs, tied down until 2035.
Beyond the Final Whistle: In an era when loyalty is usually a negotiating tactic, Williams has done the rarest thing in modern football — he has told the truth early, named the clubs he rejected, and corrected his own agent on the record. Arsenal, Barcelona and PSG should stop calling. Do you believe any elite player still chooses home over money, or is Williams simply one of a kind?
