Paris Saint-Germain will face Barcelona in Tuesday's Champions League blockbuster without Nuno Mendes, after the French champions confirmed on Sunday that their first-choice left-back faces weeks on the sidelines with a left thigh injury.
It is the worst possible news at the worst possible time for Luis Enrique. Mendes was the defender PSG would have trusted most against Lamine Yamal, and instead the back-to-back European champions must now rework their left side 48 hours before the biggest game of the league phase so far.
How the injury happened
Mendes suffered the injury during Saturday's 3-1 Ligue 1 victory at Strasbourg, a game PSG had already framed as preparation for Barcelona in their rotation dilemma at the Meinau. Brought on in the 53rd minute, the 24-year-old Portugal international could not finish the match and left the pitch late on, with Enrique choosing to finish with ten men rather than risk further damage.
At full time the PSG coach played it down, but Sunday morning's examinations told a different story. "Nuno Mendes, who suffered an injury to his left thigh during last night's match against RC Strasbourg Alsace, will be unavailable for the next few weeks," PSG said in the statement reported by Reuters. The Associated Press report carried by TSN describes the problem as a tear in his left thigh. Mendes has made seven appearances across all competitions this season.
The Yamal problem
This is not an ordinary absence, because of who was waiting on that flank. Yamal operates from Barcelona's right, cutting inside onto his left foot, and has scored nine goals this season for a Barcelona side that has won all 11 of its games in La Liga and the Champions League — including Saturday's 5-2 win over Real Betis. Mendes, with his recovery pace and one-v-one defending, has been one of the very few full-backs in Europe to limit him.
The likely replacement is veteran France international Lucas Digne, signed this summer as Mendes' cover and now asked to handle the most dangerous teenager in world football at the Parc des Princes. Warren Zaire-Emery, who finished the Strasbourg game at left-back, is the alternative if Enrique wants energy over experience.
So what? Top spot and momentum on the line
Tuesday's game is a straight fight for control of the league phase: PSG sit top of the standings with maximum points from their opening two matches, with Barcelona second, also on six points. The winner takes a commanding grip on a top-eight finish and the bye to the last 16 that comes with it. For PSG, the absence also stretches beyond one night — "the next few weeks" covers a demanding run in which Enrique's squad depth on the left, an area he protected carefully all season, will now be tested every three days.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Injuries do not come much crueller than this. PSG planned their entire week around keeping their key men fresh for Barcelona, and still lost the one player Barcelona would most have wanted them to lose. Digne is a fine professional, but if Yamal isolates him early and the Parc des Princes goes quiet, this tie could tilt on a thigh injury in Strasbourg. Can PSG still beat Barcelona without Mendes — or does Yamal decide this one on his own? Tell us in the comments.
