The waiting is almost over.

After weeks of transfer rumours, managerial changes, tactical experiments and pre-season predictions, the Premier League Opening Weekend 2026/27 begins on Friday night.

And it begins with the champions.

Arsenal will welcome newly promoted Coventry City to the Emirates Stadium on Friday, August 21, as Mikel Arteta’s side begin the defence of the Premier League title. Coventry are returning to England’s top flight after a 25-year absence.

But Arsenal are not the only giant facing an intriguing first test.

Manchester United travel to promoted Hull City. Manchester City begin the post-Pep Guardiola era at home to Bournemouth. Liverpool face a potentially dangerous trip to Newcastle. Tottenham visit Brentford, while Chelsea travel across west London to face Fulham.

That gives us one obvious question before the first ball is kicked:

Will all of the Premier League’s traditional Big Six win their opening match?

Our answer is probably not.

Some have favourable fixtures.

Others could discover immediately why the Premier League remains so unpredictable.

And beyond the opening results, another question will shape the coming months:

Who are the players we should be watching most closely in 2026/27?

Let’s make our predictions.

Premier League Opening Weekend 2026/27: The Big Six Fixtures

For the first time in months, predictions are about to meet reality.

Arsenal enter the season as defending champions, but several of their traditional rivals have undergone significant changes.

Manchester City have replaced Pep Guardiola with Enzo Maresca. Liverpool begin a new league campaign under Andoni Iraola. Chelsea enter the season under Xabi Alonso, while Michael Carrick prepares for his first full campaign in charge of Manchester United. Tottenham, meanwhile, are trying to build on the recovery Roberto De Zerbi inspired late last season.

That managerial upheaval makes this one of the most fascinating Premier League openings in years.

So who starts with three points?

1. Arsenal vs Coventry City

Prediction: Arsenal Win

The champions get the honour of opening the season.

And on paper, Arsenal could hardly ask for a more favourable starting point.

Coventry deserve enormous respect.

Returning to the Premier League after 25 years is a remarkable achievement, and the emotion surrounding their return could make them dangerous.

But visiting the Emirates to face the defending champions is an enormous jump.

Arsenal finally ended their long wait for the Premier League title last season, and now the challenge changes completely.

Winning the championship is difficult.

Defending it may be even harder.

Arteta’s side cannot afford to begin slowly, particularly when Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United will all believe they can challenge.

Arsenal have also strengthened their midfield, with Bruno Guimarães among the major additions to a squad already containing Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard. Recent season previews identify Arsenal’s strengthened squad as one of the reasons they are well placed to mount another serious title challenge.

Coventry will probably try to remain compact, frustrate Arsenal and attack whenever opportunities appear in transition.

But over 90 minutes, Arsenal should have too much quality.

2. Hull City vs Manchester United

Prediction: Manchester United Win

Manchester United begin away from home, and that automatically makes this more interesting.

Hull City are another of the promoted teams joining the Premier League for 2026/27. The official Premier League season changeover confirmed Coventry, Ipswich Town and Hull as the three incoming clubs.

A newly promoted side playing its first home match can be dangerous.

The crowd will be loud.

The intensity will be high.

And Manchester United will be expected to win.

That combination can create pressure.

Michael Carrick nevertheless enters his first full season with reasons for optimism. United finished third last season, while their midfield has been strengthened as the club attempts to build on the progress made after Carrick took charge.

The key remains Bruno Fernandes.

The Premier League’s own Fantasy analysis shows how influential Fernandes became after Carrick took over. From Gameweek 22 onward, he was the highest-scoring Fantasy player, collecting 129 points at an average of 7.6 per match.

That relationship could become central to United’s season.

Hull may make the afternoon uncomfortable.

But if Manchester United genuinely intend to challenge the teams above them, this is exactly the type of fixture they need to win.

3. Manchester City vs Bournemouth

Prediction: Manchester City Win — But Watch This One Carefully

This might normally look like the easiest prediction on the list.

Manchester City.

At the Etihad.

Against Bournemouth.

Three points.

Except this isn’t the Manchester City we’ve become accustomed to watching.

The Guardiola era is over.

Enzo Maresca is now responsible for beginning City’s next chapter.

And perhaps even more significantly, Rodri is gone.

City enter 2026/27 having lost one of the most important midfielders in their history to Barcelona, while Maresca has inherited the enormous challenge of following Guardiola.

That makes City’s opening performance almost as interesting as the result.

How will they build from the back?

Who controls midfield?

Will Maresca immediately impose his positional style?

And can City retain the ruthless attacking identity that made them so difficult to stop?

Bournemouth shouldn’t be dismissed either.

They finished sixth last season and are beginning a new era of their own under Marco Rose while also preparing for European football.

Still, City have one enormous advantage.

Erling Haaland.

The Premier League’s official Fantasy preview identifies Haaland as one of the essential players entering the season, with 71 percent of managers selecting him despite his record £15.5m Fantasy price.

Give Haaland chances and tactical transition suddenly matters much less.

4. Newcastle United vs Liverpool

Prediction: Draw

This is where I think the Big Six perfect opening weekend ends.

Liverpool have the most dangerous opening fixture among the traditional giants.

A trip to Newcastle is rarely comfortable, and Liverpool arrive during a period of significant change.

Andoni Iraola has taken charge after leaving Bournemouth and is attempting to restore Liverpool following a disappointing title defence.

There are major questions.

Mohamed Salah is no longer there.

Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak now carry even greater attacking responsibility.

Iraola must implement his high-intensity football while rebuilding confidence and creating a new Liverpool identity.

Newcastle have undergone changes themselves, but St James’ Park remains one of the Premier League’s most difficult environments.

They have also just strengthened at right-back with Amar Dedic, signed from Benfica for £29.5 million amid Tino Livramento’s injury absence.

Liverpool certainly possess enough attacking talent to win.

But this feels like the kind of opening-weekend match where both teams will have moments.

Beyond the Final Whistle prediction: Newcastle United 2-2 Liverpool

And if that happens, the answer to our headline question is already no.

5. Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur

Prediction: Tottenham Win — Narrowly

Tottenham might be the hardest Big Six team to predict this season.

Their 2025/26 campaign became a battle for survival before Roberto De Zerbi helped steady the club late in the season.

De Zerbi collected 11 points from seven matches during the run-in and helped Spurs avoid what had threatened to become a disastrous relegation.

Now comes the rebuild.

Several familiar faces have departed, and Tottenham have invested heavily in reshaping the squad.

The challenge is turning that turnover into a coherent team quickly.

Brentford away is not an ideal place to discover whether everything has clicked.

The Bees continue to build intelligently and have added midfielder Mamadou Sangare, their new club-record signing, after his impressive season with Lens.

This could be physical, aggressive and uncomfortable for Spurs.

But De Zerbi’s influence should be clearer after a full summer of preparation.

I’m backing Tottenham — but only just.

6. Fulham vs Chelsea

Prediction: Chelsea Win

And finally, Chelsea.

Xabi Alonso’s first Premier League match of the new campaign comes with the added complication of being a London derby.

Chelsea travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham with expectations significantly higher than they were a year ago.

The squad is deeper.

The attacking options are stronger.

And Alonso has been given players capable of providing greater tactical flexibility.

Chelsea’s summer additions include Morgan Rogers, whose £117 million arrival from Aston Villa immediately made him one of the most closely watched players in English football.

The Guardian’s Chelsea season preview notes that Alonso now has a more rounded squad, with Rogers among the players adding quality to areas Chelsea needed to strengthen.

Rogers’ relationship with Cole Palmer could be particularly interesting. The pair know each other from Manchester City’s academy, while Rogers demonstrated at Aston Villa that he can develop productive combinations with teammates in attacking areas.

Fulham will make this difficult.

Derbies often ignore expectations.

But Chelsea should have enough individual quality to create the decisive moments.

So, Will All the Big Six Win on Opening Weekend?

No.

Our predictions give victories to:

Arsenal ✅

Manchester United ✅

Manchester City ✅

Tottenham ✅

Chelsea ✅

But:

Liverpool ➖ Draw

And Liverpool aren’t the only team vulnerable.

Tottenham’s trip to Brentford could easily produce an upset, while promoted Hull will approach Manchester United with nothing to lose.

That’s what makes opening weekend so fascinating.

Pre-season predictions are comfortable.

Premier League matches aren’t.

One red card, one defensive mistake, one brilliant finish or one inspired goalkeeper can destroy months of predictions within seconds.

And that’s exactly why we’re ready for it to return.

10 Premier League Players to Watch in 2026/27

Opening weekend is only the beginning.

Over the next nine months, new stars will emerge, established superstars will attempt to dominate again and expensive signings will discover whether they can handle the pressure of the Premier League.

The Premier League has already highlighted a number of intriguing newcomers, while its pre-season analysis provides clues about players entering the campaign in strong form.

Here are 10 players we believe could shape the season.

1. Erling Haaland — Manchester City

Sometimes the obvious choice is obvious for a reason.

Haaland remains the most frightening goalscorer in the Premier League.

But this season presents a new challenge.

For the first time in his Manchester City career, he begins a league campaign without Pep Guardiola as his manager.

Maresca must build a team capable of continuing to create the volume and quality of chances Haaland needs.

Rodri’s departure also changes the structure behind him.

Yet if City adapt quickly, Haaland remains a leading candidate to finish as the league’s top scorer.

The official Fantasy Premier League analysis certainly expects another enormous campaign, making him the most popular early selection among managers.

2. Bruno Guimarães — Arsenal

This is one of the signings I’m most interested in watching.

Arsenal were already champions.

They didn’t need a complete rebuild.

They needed players capable of making an excellent team even better.

Bruno gives Arteta another midfielder who can control possession, progress the ball, compete physically and operate alongside Declan Rice.

The tactical possibilities are enormous.

Rice can move higher.

Bruno can dictate from deeper positions.

Ødegaard can receive possession closer to the opposition penalty area.

Or Rice and Bruno can form a powerful double pivot in difficult matches.

3. Cole Palmer — Chelsea

Chelsea may have spent enormous money around him, but Palmer remains central to everything.

His intelligence between the lines, composure around the penalty area and ability to create something from almost nothing make him Chelsea’s attacking reference point.

The interesting part this season is what happens when opponents focus on stopping him.

That’s where Rogers and Chelsea’s other attacking options become important.

If Alonso can create a system where opponents can no longer double-team Palmer without leaving dangerous spaces elsewhere, Chelsea’s attack could become considerably harder to defend.

4. Morgan Rogers — Chelsea

£117 million changes expectations.

Rogers isn’t arriving as a promising squad option.

He arrives with the pressure associated with becoming Chelsea’s record signing.

But there are legitimate reasons for excitement.

He can carry the ball through midfield, operate from different attacking positions and use his physical strength to turn transitions into dangerous attacks.

His relationship with Palmer could become one of Chelsea’s most important attacking partnerships.

What to watch: Where does Alonso use him — and can he produce enough goals and assists to justify the enormous fee?

5. Bruno Fernandes — Manchester United

Another Bruno.

Another midfielder carrying enormous responsibility.

Fernandes remains Manchester United’s creative heartbeat.

His numbers after Carrick took charge last season provide a major reason for optimism entering 2026/27. The Premier League’s Fantasy analysis shows he averaged 7.6 points per match after Carrick’s appointment and became the game’s leading scorer during that period.

Carrick understands what Fernandes can do.

Now he needs to construct a team that consistently gets the best from him.

6. Shea Lacey — Manchester United

This is our breakout selection.

Not every player to watch needs to cost £100 million.

Sometimes the most exciting story is a young player forcing his way into the conversation.

Shea Lacey enters the season with growing expectations around Manchester United, and recent season previews have identified him as one of the club’s potential breakout players.

Young players need opportunity as much as talent.

If Carrick trusts him, Lacey could become one of the surprise stories of the season.

7. Alexander Isak — Liverpool

Liverpool need established attacking players to take responsibility in their new era.

That makes Isak particularly important.

Salah’s departure removes a player who carried enormous goalscoring responsibility for years.

Somebody has to replace that output.

It probably won’t be one player.

But Isak has the quality to become the focal point of Iraola’s attack.

Movement, finishing and the ability to create opportunities for himself make him one of the league’s most dangerous forwards when healthy.

8. Florian Wirtz — Liverpool

Last season didn’t completely deliver what many expected.

Now comes the response.

Wirtz possesses too much technical quality to be dismissed after one difficult campaign.

Iraola’s football could provide him with new opportunities, particularly if Liverpool play with greater aggression and verticality.

The absence of Salah also changes the attacking hierarchy.

Liverpool need creativity from elsewhere.

Wirtz has an opportunity to make the team his own.

9. Declan Rice — Arsenal

Bruno Guimarães arriving doesn’t make Rice less important.

It may make him even more dangerous.

But another technically secure midfielder alongside him could give Arteta greater freedom to change Rice’s responsibilities depending on the opponent.

Some matches may require him to protect the defence.

Others may allow him to attack the box more aggressively.

Let’s finish outside the Big Six.

That immediately makes his adaptation fascinating.

Brentford have repeatedly shown that smart recruitment can allow clubs without Big Six resources to compete above financial expectations.

If Sangare adapts quickly, he could become another example.

And Tottenham may get the first close-up look at him.

Which Big Six Club Has the Most Difficult Opening Match?

Liverpool.

Newcastle away stands out immediately.

The Reds are changing managers, adjusting to life without Salah and trying to establish a new identity under Iraola.

St James’ Park is hardly the ideal laboratory.

Tottenham aren’t far behind.

Brentford away has upset written all over it if Spurs aren’t defensively organised.

Chelsea’s London derby against Fulham also deserves respect.

By contrast, Arsenal will be expected to dominate Coventry at home, while Manchester City should begin as strong favourites against Bournemouth despite the uncertainty surrounding their new era.

Manchester United fall somewhere in between.

Hull away should be a victory.

But promoted teams can be at their most dangerous before the reality of a long Premier League season sets in.

Which Big Six Club Faces the Most Pressure This Season?

This might be Manchester City.

Not because they have the weakest squad.

Far from it.

The pressure comes from what they’re replacing.

Guardiola transformed Manchester City.

Rodri became the heartbeat of their midfield.

Now both are gone.

Maresca is not simply taking over another Premier League club.

He is following one of the most successful managers English football has seen.

City’s 2026/27 preview highlights both the scale of Guardiola’s departure and the midfield challenge created by Rodri leaving for Barcelona.

Every tactical decision will be compared.

Every defeat will create questions.

Every difficult spell will generate discussion about whether City’s era of dominance has ended.

That’s an enormous burden.

But it also makes Manchester City one of the most fascinating teams to watch.

Could Arsenal Defend Their Premier League Title?

Absolutely.

In fact, Arsenal enter the campaign with something they didn’t possess twelve months ago:

proof that they can finish the job.

For years, questions followed Arteta’s team.

Were they experienced enough?

Could they survive the pressure?

Could they handle the final weeks of a title race?

Now the challenge is different.

Everyone wants to beat the champions.

The Premier League Opening Weekend 2026/27 feels different.

Arsenal are no longer chasing the champions.

Manchester City are beginning life after Guardiola.

Liverpool are beginning life under Iraola and without Salah.

Chelsea are trusting Alonso to turn an enormously talented squad into a genuine contender.

Manchester United want to prove last season’s progress under Carrick was only the beginning.

Six giants.

Six very different stories.

And six opening fixtures that could immediately change the mood around each club.

So will they all win?

We don’t think so.

Our prediction is five victories and one draw, with Liverpool dropping points at Newcastle.

But opening weekend has a habit of destroying predictions.

That’s why we watch.

Final Thoughts

For months we’ve talked about transfers.

We’ve debated managers.

We’ve analysed tactics.

We’ve predicted title winners and relegation candidates.

Now the football gets to answer us.

Friday night at the Emirates begins a journey that will stretch across 380 Premier League matches before a champion is crowned.

Perhaps Arsenal will defend their title.

Perhaps Manchester City will immediately thrive under Maresca.

Perhaps Chelsea’s expensive project will finally explode into life.

Perhaps Liverpool will rediscover themselves under Iraola.

Perhaps Manchester United will return to the title race.
