Fabrizio Romano has lifted the lid on Real Madrid's summer 2027 blueprint, claiming the Spanish giants have settled on a centre-back and a central midfielder as their two non-negotiable transfer priorities — even before the January window has opened.
The news lands amid a full-blown defensive crisis at the Bernabeu. Jose Mourinho is down to Antonio Rudiger as his only fully available senior centre-back for Saturday's La Liga clash with Villarreal, a stark illustration of why the club wants fresh blood at the back next summer.
Why Madrid need another centre-back
Rudiger, now 33, is widely expected to leave on a free transfer at the end of the season after the club decided against renewing his contract. He signed a one-year extension in June that takes him to the end of the 2026-27 campaign, but with Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen ahead of him in the pecking order, he is no longer an undisputed starter.
Konate arrived on a free from Liverpool over the summer and has quickly become central to Mourinho's plans, while Raul Asensio is expected to be sold — a combination that leaves at least one spot open in the squad.
The immediate picture is bleak. Huijsen is suspended after his red card in the derby, Konate is nursing the knee injury sustained on international duty with France, Asensio has undergone surgery and Eder Militao has only just returned to group training after his lengthy rehabilitation. Rudiger's own workload has needed careful management following his knee problems. Madrid Universal reports Tchouameni could once again be asked to solve the crisis at the back.
Tchouameni, nominally a midfielder, is once again being talked about as an emergency defensive option — a role he filled during Carlo Ancelotti's tenure.
Midfield refresh also on the agenda
Romano's claim that a central midfielder is the second priority dovetails with the uncertainty around Tchouameni. Madrid are believed to be open to selling the Frenchman next summer, with Manchester United still thought to be keen.
Bernardo Silva was brought in from Manchester City over the summer to add creativity, but Mourinho's midfield puzzle remains unsettled — Bellingham, Valverde, Camavinga, Tchouameni and Bernardo are all fighting for minutes, and the club appear to want a specialist to control games at the highest level.
That Madrid are already locking in their summer priorities in October underlines the scale of the rebuild being plotted at Valdebebas. The injuries have only accelerated the thinking.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Real Madrid are planning the future while fighting fires in the present. Rudiger's probable free exit and the Tchouameni uncertainty make the centre-back and midfield priorities obvious — but with a defensive emergency to solve this Saturday against Villarreal, Mourinho will be more concerned with who is fit than who arrives in July.
