Corentin Tolisso struck nine minutes after half-time to earn Lyon a 1-1 draw at Real Sociedad in the Europa League, cancelling out Orri Óskarsson's first-half opener at the Reale Arena. The Basque side led and pushed for a winner, but Lyon's captain had the final say in a result that keeps both clubs in the play-off picture.
Óskarsson rewards Sociedad's fast start
Real Sociedad came into Matchday 4 with four points and the momentum of a start that included a 6-0 demolition of Lillestrøm, and they played like a side that believed a famous European scalp was there for the taking. Mikel Oyarzabal and Gonçalo Guedes supported Óskarsson in a 4-4-2, and the pressure told on 28 minutes: Ander Barrenetxea created the chance and Óskarsson finished it for 1-0, as theScore's match timeline recorded.
Lyon, who arrived on six points, were rattled but not overrun. Kaïl Boudache was booked on 38 minutes as the French side fought to stay in the contest, and Greek referee Anastasios Papapetrou had to keep a lid on a game that produced 23 Sociedad fouls and seven yellow cards in total. Sociedad, beaten in the Basque derby by Athletic Bilbao at the weekend, went in at the break ahead and deservedly so.
Tolisso leads the Lyon response
The second half belonged to Lyon's leaders. Sociedad made a change at the interval, Moussa Sarr replacing Jon Martín, but on 54 minutes Lyon levelled: Tanner Tessmann turned provider and Tolisso, the World Cup-winning midfielder who has been carrying this side through its post-Fonseca rebuild — a saga Beyond The Final Whistle traced when Paulo Fonseca left Lyon for Sporting — scored the equaliser, as Sports Mole's match centre confirmed.
Both benches chased a winner. Guedes, booked on 61 minutes, made way for Jon Ochieng on 66, while Lyon sent on Julien Duranville for Keito Nakamura a minute later. Luka Sucic replaced the tiring Óskarsson on 79 minutes and Pablo Marín came on for Barrenetxea, but the chances dried up. Dominik Greif was booked for time-wasting on 87 minutes, Yangel Herrera followed him into the book on 89, and Abner Vinícius was cautioned in stoppage time as Lyon protected the point. There were no red cards, and the shot count finished level at four on target apiece.
So what: a point that suits Lyon more than Sociedad
Lyon move to seven points from four matches — two wins, a draw and a defeat — and remain firmly on course for the knockout rounds, with a top-eight place still within reach if they finish the league phase strongly. An away point in San Sebastián, from a goal down, is exactly the kind of result that steadies a campaign.
Sociedad reach five points, with one win, two draws and one defeat, and will feel this was two points dropped: they led at home, had the better of the first half, and still could not put Lyon away. In a 36-team table this congested, home draws against direct rivals are the results that come back to bite in January. Their goal difference, fattened by that Lillestrøm rout, remains a useful insurance policy.
Beyond the Final Whistle: this was a game Sociedad had to win and Lyon simply had not to lose, and the outcome matched those priorities exactly. Óskarsson continues to look like a striker built for European nights, but a side that commits 23 fouls and still cannot protect a lead has a control problem, not a quality problem. Tolisso, meanwhile, remains Lyon's man for the big moment. Did Sociedad throw away two points at the Reale Arena, or is a draw with Lyon a fair result? Let us know in the comments.
