Real Madrid have contacted Scott McTominay's representatives over a potential move to the Santiago Bernabéu, as the Scotland midfielder's contract talks with Napoli continue to stall.
The Italian side's star midfielder is into the third year of the four-year deal he signed when he joined from Manchester United in the summer of 2024, and negotiations over an extension have made little progress — alerting some of Europe's biggest clubs.
Madrid make their move
According to Tuttomercatoweb, via ESPN, Real Madrid have been in contact with McTominay's entourage to request information about his situation. The report adds that several Premier League clubs are also monitoring developments closely, and any transfer would more likely be pushed back until next summer.
Il Mattino, meanwhile, reports that Madrid have formally made enquiries about the 29-year-old's uncertain future. The Spanish giants are now managed by José Mourinho — the man who handed McTominay his senior debut at Old Trafford and once famously referred to him as "my boy". A reunion in the Spanish capital would be a blockbuster story.
The contract stand-off
McTominay is reportedly seeking a lucrative new contract to reflect his status as one of Napoli's key players, but talks have hit a wall. The two sides are far apart on figures: the midfielder currently earns around €3m per season, his camp want more than €8m to extend to 2030, while Napoli's offer in the summer was closer to €5m.
Club president Aurelio De Laurentiis reportedly does not view the renewal as an urgent priority with almost two years still left on the deal, but McTominay's side want the situation settled quickly. Sky Italia's Gianluca Di Marzio remains optimistic an agreement can eventually be found, but the lack of progress has not gone unnoticed elsewhere.
Napoli, for their part, have no desire to sell. Reports in Italy suggest the club would block any January departure, keeping McTominay for the remainder of the season while giving themselves more time to negotiate a new deal.
A fan favourite in Naples
Few players have made as big an impact in Serie A in recent years. McTominay scored 13 goals and provided six assists in his debut season in Italy as he fired Napoli to the Scudetto, earning the 2024/25 Serie A MVP award. He followed that up with 14 goals and four assists the following campaign, becoming a beloved figure at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
The speculation arrives just as McTominay has returned to full training after undergoing a heart ablation procedure in September to correct an irregular rhythm. He was cleared for action earlier this week, just 30 days after the operation, though he missed all of Scotland's games during the international break.
What next?
Napoli sit ninth in Serie A with seven points from their opening matches and welcome Frosinone on Saturday as club football returns after the international break. For now, McTominay's focus will be on rediscovering his best form in blue.
But with Madrid circling and Premier League suitors on alert, Napoli may find that winning the race to secure their midfield talisman's future is becoming a battle they cannot afford to lose.
Beyond the Final Whistle verdict: Real Madrid's interest in Scott McTominay is the biggest transfer story of the international break — a Mourinho reunion at the Bernabéu would be box office, but Napoli will fight hard to keep their MVP.
