Victor Osimhen will go under the knife on Saturday after Galatasaray confirmed the Nigeria striker needs arthroscopic surgery on his left knee — a hammer blow for club and country just six days before the Super Eagles' defining Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The 27-year-old picked up the injury in Galatasaray's 2-0 win over VfB Stuttgart in the Champions League on Tuesday, a night that had looked like a triumph for the Turkish champions before the medical news landed. A scan afterwards revealed a loose body in his left knee, and the club moved quickly to schedule surgery.
It is the last thing Nigeria needed. Osimhen is not just the Super Eagles' main striker — he is the player their entire attack is built around, and the qualifiers against Tanzania on November 13 and November 17 will now almost certainly go ahead without him.
What Galatasaray said
Galatasaray announced the news in an official statement on Friday, and the wording left no room for doubt. "In the UEFA Champions League match we played against VfB Stuttgart, our player Victor Osimhen sustained a strain in his left knee, and MRI examinations detected a loose body," the club said.
"An arthroscopic knee surgery will be performed tomorrow at Maslak Acibadem Hospital by our club doctor Yener Ince. For this reason, our player has been removed from the squad for tomorrow's match against Amed S. F."
The operation will take place on Saturday, November 7, and Osimhen will miss the Super Lig meeting with Amed Sportif Faaliyetler at Rams Park. Crucially, Galatasaray gave no recovery timeline, and the club's statement said nothing about when he might return. Arthroscopic surgery is keyhole surgery, generally far less serious than a full knee reconstruction, but the length of any lay-off depends on what the surgeons find once they operate — and nobody at Galatasaray is putting a date on it yet.
Nigeria's Tanzania headache
For Nigeria, the timing could hardly be worse. The Super Eagles host Tanzania in Uyo on Friday, November 13, before travelling to Dar es Salaam for the return leg on Tuesday, November 17, in qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. Reports in Nigeria say Osimhen is set to miss both games, with BusinessDay reporting that the surgery rules him out of the double-header.
Head coach Eric Chelle must now plan the two most important games of the campaign without the one player who guarantees goals. Nigeria sit in Group L alongside Tanzania, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, and there is no margin for dropped points against a Tanzania side that will smell blood the moment the teamsheets are announced.
This is also the second time in three months that injury has robbed Nigeria of their talisman at a decisive moment. Osimhen missed the Super Eagles' first two qualifiers in September, against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, and he had only recently returned from a groin strain that kept him out of three Galatasaray games. His body has given him no peace this season, and Chelle's squad planning keeps being rewritten by the treatment room.
So what: Galatasaray lose their spearhead too
The blow lands just as hard in Istanbul. Osimhen is Galatasaray's leading marksman and the focal point of everything they do in attack, and losing him for an unspecified spell — with no return date — leaves a hole no single signing can fill mid-season.
Galatasaray's medical team will hope the loose body is a straightforward clean-up and that the recovery is measured in weeks rather than months. But until the surgery is done and the rehabilitation clock starts, both the club and Nigeria are guessing. That uncertainty is the real story here: a star striker, a knee operation, and two teams waiting on a surgeon's report.
Osimhen's rise from Olusosun to Galatasaray's leading man has been one of African football's great stories, and his importance to Nigeria cannot be overstated — he is the player the Super Eagles look to when a game, or a campaign, is on the line.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Nigeria's AFCON hopes were already balanced on a knife-edge, and losing Osimhen days before the Tanzania double-header tilts the whole campaign. No other Super Eagle carries his goals, his presence or his fear factor, and Chelle cannot simply replace him — he has to reinvent the attack in six days. If Nigeria still find a way through without their talisman, it will be their most impressive result of the qualifiers; if they do not, this knee will be the moment the campaign turned. Galatasaray, meanwhile, must be honest with their fans about the timeline once the surgery is done — silence will only feed the rumours.
