William Saliba was the face missing from Arsenal's official 2026/27 squad photo on Wednesday — and the absence was loud enough that the club had to explain it in public. The France defender, still to play a minute this season, was away at a medical appointment as he continues his recovery from the back injury he suffered at the World Cup.

A photo that started a scare

Arsenal posted the annual first-team photograph from their London Colney base on Wednesday afternoon, with Mikel Arteta pictured behind the Premier League and Community Shield trophies. Supporters scanning the rows quickly spotted the gap: no Saliba.

For a fanbase that has waited since July for its best defender, the alarm was understandable, and the club moved to calm it within moments of publishing the image. As football.london reported, Arsenal stated on X: "Due to a medical appointment, William Saliba was not available this afternoon."

Saliba has been sidelined since France's World Cup semi-final defeat by Spain in the summer, when he was forced off with the back problem that has since ruled him out of the opening months of Arsenal's season. The injury did not require surgery, but it has proved slow to settle, and the 25-year-old is only now back training on grass and working through individual sessions.

Weeks, not days, for a very specific injury

Arteta has refused to pin a date on the return, and his latest update explains why. The manager described a player building his capacity session by session — managing load and repetitions, with team training still a step away in the coming weeks rather than an appointment this weekend.

Asked whether Saliba could be back around the November international break, Arteta would not commit, saying Arsenal are "still talking about weeks" and stressing how specific this back injury is. talkSPORT reports the defender is targeting a November comeback, but nothing in Arteta's language suggests the club will rush a player whose deal now runs until 2030 and whose long-term fitness matters more than any single fixture.

That caution is a measure of what Saliba has become. Signed from Saint-Etienne as an 18-year-old in 2019 and developed through loans in France, he has been named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in every season since his top-flight debut in 2022, has made 184 Arsenal appearances, and was central to last season's title — the club's first in 22 years. You do not gamble with a back like that in October.

Coping without him — and now without Hincapie too

Arsenal, to their credit, have coped. Summer signing Ezri Konsa has partnered Gabriel Magalhaes in Saliba's place, and the Gunners were winning again on Tuesday night, beating Lille 3-0 in the Champions League with Cristhian Mosquera also available as cover.

But the cover is thinning at exactly the wrong moment. Piero Hincapie joined the injury list after the weekend win over Leeds, missed the Lille game, and Arteta has indicated his problem looks the more significant of the current defensive setbacks, with a matter of weeks expected. Martin Zubimendi and Christos Tzolis are also working their way back. A squad built to absorb one absence is now absorbing several in the same area of the pitch.

So what: November shapes Arsenal's season

This is where the photo stops being a curiosity and becomes a schedule problem. Arsenal go to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League this weekend, and the fixtures stack up quickly after that. Every week Saliba's return slips is another week Konsa and Gabriel must play without rest, and another week with no margin for a suspension, a knock or a bad night.

The medical appointment itself may be routine — a checkpoint in a carefully managed recovery — but the club felt it had to explain a missing face in a photograph. That tells you how central Saliba is to how this season will be judged. Arsenal's title defence can survive his absence for a while longer. It cannot build a whole campaign around it.

Beyond the Final Whistle: A squad photo should be the softest story of the season, yet Arsenal ended up issuing a medical bulletin because of one empty seat. Our verdict: the club are right to protect Saliba — backs end careers when they are rushed — but the longer "weeks, not days" lasts, the more this season becomes a test of the depth Arsenal bought precisely for moments like this. Konsa has passed every exam so far; November will set the hardest ones yet. Are Arsenal handling Saliba's return correctly, or should they have signed another centre-back in the summer?
