Yan Diomande wrote his name into Real Madrid's history books on Wednesday night, breaking a Champions League record held by Guti since 1999 with a goal and an assist off the bench in the 4-1 win over his former club RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger was introduced for Vinicius Junior on 70 minutes with Madrid 2-0 up through Bernardo Silva and Arda Guler. Thirteen minutes later he set up Kylian Mbappe for the third, and after Tidiam Gomis pulled one back for Leipzig, Diomande finished from Brahim Diaz's pass on 87 minutes for his first Champions League goal in a Madrid shirt.
A record that stood for 27 years
As Get Spanish Football News reported from Opta's figures, at 19 years and 341 days Diomande has become the youngest Real Madrid substitute to score and assist in a Champions League match. The previous record belonged to Guti, who did it against Molde in September 1999 at 22 years and 325 days — nearly three years older.
Records at Madrid are not broken by accident. The Bernabeu has seen a quarter-century of Galacticos since Guti's night against Molde, and none of them, as a substitute, managed what the teenager from Ivory Coast did in 20 minutes against the club that sold him this summer.
Doing it against his old club
There was a layer of storybook cruelty to the cameo. Diomande joined Madrid from Leipzig in the summer of 2026 after a final season in Germany of 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 appearances, as DailySports noted — and it was Leipzig who paid for his announcement performance on Europe's biggest stage.
Nor was it a one-off. Three days earlier Diomande had scored and assisted in Madrid's 4-1 La Liga win over Sevilla, setting another age record in the process. Two 4-1 wins, two goal-and-assist performances, four days apart: this is a player in a genuine run of form, not a youngster enjoying one kind night.
So what does this mean for Madrid?
Madrid have three wins from three in the league phase and, more importantly, a new weapon Jose Mourinho did not have a month ago. Vinicius Junior — who was told this week that no one is untouchable at Madrid — now has a teenager taking his minutes and breaking records in them. Diomande's next step is obvious and hard: turning 20-minute cameos into starts, in a forward line where Mbappe is undroppable and every place is contested.
For Ivory Coast, too, this matters. African teenagers do not often get to announce themselves at the Bernabeu in the Champions League, and a winger producing in the biggest club games will be impossible for his national team to ignore as the international calendar builds toward the World Cup.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Guti's record survived 27 years of superstars because scoring and creating off the bench in Europe is a specialist's art — and Diomande has now done the league version and the Champions League version in the same week, against his former club, at 19. Madrid may have signed him as one for the future, but the future is arriving early. Should Mourinho start Diomande in the next big game, or keep him as the bench weapon nobody wants to face?
