Xabi Alonso has backed Estevao to play a bigger role for Chelsea this season and ruled out a January loan, insisting the Brazilian teenager's absence is about game context, not attitude, on the eve of Manchester United's visit to Stamford Bridge.
The Chelsea manager faced a press conference dominated by one name on Friday. Estevao, 19, was an unused substitute in Wednesday's Carabao Cup defeat on penalties at Liverpool, has started only two matches in all competitions this season and is still waiting for a first Premier League start under Alonso. With reports linking the winger with a January loan — the story BTFW covered in the Estevao freeze-out piece earlier this week — Alonso was asked directly whether a temporary move was possible.
"No discussions about that," he said, in quotes reported by Reuters. "The season is long and there will be moments for everyone. It's a process for the team, for Este, for myself. But I'm sure that in the season he'll have his games, his minutes. And we're still early in the season but he'll be there."
Not about attitude
Alonso was equally firm that the omission is no reflection on the player himself. "It's not about attitude; it's been about the context of games, the start of the season," he said, as West London Sport reported from Cobham. "He's a great guy."
The manager also took ownership of the frustration. "It's no secret that all players want to be on the pitch; they want to be playing," Alonso said. "And when any of them haven't had enough minutes because of my decision, I have to take the responsibility for that, that they are not as happy as they could be."
That is a notable shift in tone. Estevao shone in flashes last season after arriving from Palmeiras, but this campaign his Premier League appearances have all come late from the bench, and Wednesday at Anfield — a cup tie Chelsea were chasing — passed without him being used at all.
Injury list shapes the United test
Saturday's opponents make the timing awkward. Fifth-placed Chelsea host a Manchester United side sitting 16th under Michael Carrick, and Alonso does so with a lengthy injury list. Joao Pedro and captain Reece James remain sidelined, while Maxence Lacroix will miss a few weeks with the hamstring injury he suffered at Anfield — the setback detailed in BTFW's Lacroix update — and will not return before the November 9-17 international break.
There was better news elsewhere. Moises Caicedo, forced off at Liverpool with a minor problem, is available for tomorrow, Alonso confirmed. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, recovering from surgery on a fractured jaw, could also return before the international break, although he would likely need a protective face mask.
So what?
Words are cheap in October; minutes are the currency Estevao is short of. Alonso has now publicly committed himself — no loan, more games, more minutes — and that promise will be judged starting on Saturday. United at home, with Joao Pedro out and Chelsea needing a response to the 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham and the cup exit at Liverpool, is precisely the kind of game in which a manager either trusts his teenager or exposes his own words.
If Estevao is again watching from the bench in the closing stages of a match Chelsea need to win, the January questions will return louder — whatever Alonso said on Friday. If he plays and changes the game, a difficult week becomes a turning point for both men.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Alonso has done the easy part — defending his player in public and closing the loan door. The hard part is picking him. A manager who truly believed Estevao "will be there" would not have left him unused at Anfield with a cup tie slipping away. Saturday against a struggling United is the moment to prove Friday's words were a plan, not a press-conference shield.
Will Alonso finally start Estevao against Manchester United — and if not, how long before the teenager pushes for the move his manager says is not being discussed?
