Estevao Willian starts for Chelsea for the first time this season and Bruno Fernandes returns for Manchester United, as two managers under pressure named bold lineups for Saturday's Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge, where Michael Carrick's United arrive winless in eight and 16th in the table.
Estevao finally gets his start
Xabi Alonso has handed Estevao his first start of the season, a day after publicly backing the Brazilian teenager and insisting there had been no loan discussions. Cole Palmer, back after serving a one-match suspension in Wednesday's Carabao Cup exit at Liverpool, leads the line as a false nine, with Danny Welbeck dropping to the bench after an underwhelming night at Anfield.
Chelsea line up with Mike Penders in goal behind Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana and Levi Colwill, according to the confirmed team news reported by football.london. Pedro Neto, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia and Marco Palestra — making his first start — are across midfield, with Estevao, Palmer and Morgan Rogers in attack. Fofana keeps his place despite a difficult night at Anfield, with Maxence Lacroix's injury leaving Alonso short of alternatives at the back, and Jordan Henderson drops out of the squad altogether.
Bruno back as Carrick makes three changes
Carrick has made three changes from the side beaten by Bournemouth, and the biggest is the return of his captain. Bruno Fernandes, benched last weekend after criticising the tactics in the Champions League defeat at Como, comes back in for Youri Tielemans. Lisandro Martinez returns in place of Aiden Heaven, and Matheus Cunha starts ahead of Mason Mount.
United's confirmed side has Senne Lammens in goal, a back four of Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Martinez and Leny Yoro, Andrey Santos — facing his former club — and Carlos Baleba in midfield, and Amad Diallo, Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo behind Cunha. Luke Shaw, Benjamin Sesko, Patrick Dorgu, Manuel Ugarte and Marcus Rashford are all injured.
Speaking to TNT before kick-off, Carrick brushed off questions about his future: "I don't need any assurances for anything really, I totally understand what's needed here so I don't need any assurances from anybody, I'm just focussed on winning games." He added that it had been "100%" business as usual this week and that there is "absolutely no issue" with Fernandes.
So what it means at Stamford Bridge
This is a game neither manager can afford to lose. United, on seven points from eight games, could end Saturday in the bottom three if results go against them, and Carrick knows a defeat here would make his position close to untenable ahead of Roma and Aston Villa before the international break. Chelsea, still in the top five but winners only once at home in almost two months and beaten by Tottenham last weekend before Liverpool knocked them out of the Carabao Cup on penalties, need a statement at the Bridge just as badly.
The head-to-head offers United a sliver of hope: they have lost only twice at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League this decade and won both meetings last season. But hope is not form, and Carrick's recall of Fernandes is an admission that United cannot chase a season-saving win without their best creator on the pitch.
Beyond the Final Whistle: these lineups tell you everything about two managers out of safe options. Alonso has gambled on a teenager he has protected all season and a false nine, because the safe version of this Chelsea team was losing anyway. Carrick has gone back to the captain he dropped, because managers fighting for their jobs always end up trusting the players who can save them. One gamble will look brave by full-time. The other will look like the last throw of a man who knew the sack was coming.
Will Estevao seize his first start, or will Fernandes drag United to the win that saves Carrick? Let us know in the comments.
