Joao Pedro is a shock absentee for Chelsea in tonight's London derby against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, with Geovany Quenda handed his first Premier League start and Mike Penders starting in goal for Xabi Alonso's side.
Chelsea go into the 17:30 kick-off chasing a third straight Premier League win after thrashing Bournemouth 5-1 and winning 2-0 at Everton, but they must do it without their talisman. Tottenham, meanwhile, arrive buoyed by Monday's 3-1 victory over Coventry City — their first league win of the season — and with James Maddison starting despite Roberto De Zerbi suggesting in the build-up that the playmaker was a doubt. Our preview had flagged a fast, open derby, and the teamsheets have only added to the intrigue.
Chelsea team news: Pedro out, Quenda in
The headline news is the absence of Joao Pedro, who is not even on the bench. As football.london reported, the forward — Chelsea's top scorer in the league this season with five goals — has been left out with an injury that is being assessed. He played the full 90 minutes at Everton last weekend and was pictured in training as recently as Friday, but he was not deemed fit enough for the derby.
In his place, Quenda comes into the front three for his first Premier League start, alongside Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers, who looks set to operate as a makeshift number nine in Pedro's absence. The only other Chelsea change is the expected one in goal: the 21-year-old Penders makes his first Premier League start, deputising for Emiliano Martinez, who has undergone surgery on a fractured jaw suffered at Everton. Penders became Chelsea's youngest-ever Premier League goalkeeper when he replaced Martinez in that game, and he keeps the gloves tonight behind a defence of Josh Acheampong, Maxence Lacroix, Levi Colwill and Jorrel Hato, with Pedro Neto and captain Moises Caicedo in the side.
Chelsea XI: Penders; Acheampong, Lacroix, Colwill, Hato; Neto, Caicedo, Henderson; Palmer, Quenda; Rogers. Subs: Sharman-Lowe, Fofana, Gusto, Palestra, Barco, Lavia, Nicoll-Jazuli, Estevao, Welbeck.
Tottenham team news: Maddison starts, Tel in for Solanke
De Zerbi makes two changes to the side that finally won on Monday, as Sports Mole confirmed from the teamsheets. Former Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo does not face his old club after picking up a calf injury against Coventry, so Archie Gray drops into a back four alongside Jan Paul van Hecke, Micky van de Ven and Andrew Robertson, with Mateus Fernandes coming into midfield next to Sandro Tonali.
The second change sees Mathys Tel replace Dominic Solanke, who drops to the bench, freeing Omar Marmoush to lead the line. Mohammed Kudus and Tel flank Maddison, who starts in the number 10 role despite his manager's pre-match mind games. Pedro Porro, who had been expected to return, is only among the substitutes.
Tottenham XI: Kinsky; Gray, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Robertson; Fernandes, Tonali; Kudus, Maddison, Tel; Marmoush. Subs: Dubravka, Senesi, Gallagher, Solanke, Kulusevski, Porro, Davies, Olusesi, Williams-Barnett.
So what does it mean?
Losing your top scorer hours before a derby changes everything about how Chelsea attack: without Joao Pedro's movement, so much rests on Palmer drifting into the pockets and on Rogers holding the ball up against Van de Ven and Van Hecke. It is also a huge vote of confidence in Quenda and Penders — two young players making first league starts in one of the season's most intense fixtures. For Spurs, Maddison's availability is the swing factor: if he finds space behind Caicedo and Jordan Henderson, De Zerbi's side have the runners in Kudus, Tel and Marmoush to hurt Chelsea in transition and turn one win into a run.
Beyond the Final Whistle: This teamsheet has tilted the derby. Chelsea are still favourites at home, but a side missing its top scorer and its first-choice goalkeeper, and starting two youngsters in a derby, is suddenly vulnerable in a way the form table does not show. If Tottenham press Penders early and Maddison dictates the tempo, an upset is genuinely on. Can Quenda seize his big night, or will Spurs spoil it at the Bridge? Let us know in the comments.
