Chelsea have reportedly moved a clear step ahead of Liverpool in the race for Alex Scott, with the Bournemouth midfielder said to have verbally agreed personal terms with the Blues — while Liverpool keep both Scott and Monaco's Senegal international Lamine Camara on their January shortlist.
The 23-year-old England midfielder has become one of the most contested names in the Premier League market. Bournemouth rebuffed Chelsea's lucrative approaches in the summer, and Sports Mole reports, via Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, that Chelsea are now fully focused on finally landing Scott in January, with a mid-season departure described as entirely possible if a suitable offer arrives.
Scott's rise has been tracked on this site before — his starring role for Bournemouth was the subject of our recent Scott feature — and his stock climbed again during the October international break, when he earned senior recognition with England. His Bournemouth contract runs until the summer of 2028, but several club-record extension offers have not tied him down, and that stand-off is what has opened the door.
Terms verbally done, fee still to agree
According to TEAMtalk, reporting Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips, the player side of the deal was largely settled in the summer: Scott has verbally agreed the terms on offer, Xabi Alonso has spoken to him personally, and Chelsea now want a club-to-club agreement with Bournemouth in place before the window opens — ideally by the end of December — so he can arrive at the start of January.
The same reporting is careful to stress what this is not. No fee has been agreed with Bournemouth, Scott could still change his mind, and other clubs remain interested. Bournemouth's price is the obstacle: reports have consistently put it in the £90m to £100m range, with the Cherries only willing to sell in January if their Premier League position allows it. Chelsea's summer interest was turned away at far lower figures, so this would be a record-level mid-season commitment.
Liverpool's two-man shortlist — and the Camara alternative
Liverpool are not out of the picture, but the latest signals point them towards the other name on their list. Plettenberg reports that Scott and Lamine Camara are the two central midfielders on Liverpool's shortlist, while Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha, though held in high regard, is currently not a priority target.
Camara, 22, is a Senegal international who has impressed at Monaco with his energy, defensive work and ability to carry possession forward — and he would cost a fraction of Scott's price. TEAMtalk notes that Chelsea themselves had a fully agreed £47m deal for Camara fall through at the eleventh hour on deadline day in the summer, and have not gone back since. Liverpool's need is real: with Ryan Gravenberch having served a suspension and Dominik Szoboszlai picking up minor hamstring issues in recent weeks, their viable midfield options have looked thin for a side fighting on four fronts — a problem that also shapes tonight's Carabao Cup meeting between the two clubs at Anfield.
So what does it mean?
For Chelsea, Scott is the midfield signing Alonso has wanted since the summer, and doing the personal-terms work early is how clubs steal a march in January. For Liverpool, the choice is now stark: match a £100m-level valuation for a Premier League-proven 23-year-old, or move decisively for Camara at roughly half the price and spend the difference elsewhere. For Bournemouth, everything hinges on their league position — a club in a relegation fight does not sell its best midfielder in January at any price, which is why Chelsea want the framework agreed while the Cherries are still weighing it up.
Beyond the Final Whistle: verbal agreements win headlines, but fees win transfers — and until Chelsea meet Bournemouth's price, this race is not over. Liverpool should not wait to find out, though: Camara is younger, cheaper, battle-tested in Europe and exactly the profile their midfield is short of. If the Reds hesitate on both, they will end January with the same four tired midfielders they have now.
Who should Liverpool sign in January — Scott at any price, or Camara for half of it? Let us know in the comments.
