Raphael Onyedika scored his first goal for Eintracht Frankfurt as the hosts beat Hamburg 3-1 at Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday, winning a Nigerian scoring duel with Terem Moffi and closing to within two points of the Bundesliga's top six.
Frankfurt set the early tone in this Bundesliga Matchday 8 clash, with Can Uzun drawing a smart save and Younes Ebnoutalib forcing a reflex stop from Daniel Heuer Fernandes inside the opening minutes. The pressure told in the 10th minute, when Uzun threaded Fares Chaibi through and the Algerian's low cross was turned into his own net by Hamburg defender Warmed Omari.
Hamburg struck straight back. Just four minutes later Albert Gronbaek laid the ball across the six-yard box and Terem Moffi tapped in from close range to level at 1-1, the Nigerian striker's second goal of the season on his eighth league appearance for the visitors. Robin Koch headed a late first-half chance goalward for Frankfurt, but Heuer Fernandes saved well and the sides went in level.
Onyedika Settles the Nigerian Duel
Frankfurt needed less than two minutes of the second half to retake the lead. Chaibi swung in a corner, Lilian Brassier headed goalward, Heuer Fernandes could only parry the ball, and Raphael Onyedika bundled in the rebound from close range for his first competitive goal for the club. The Super Eagles midfielder, also making his eighth league appearance of the campaign, had won the duel with his international team-mate Moffi.
Chaibi thought he had added a third, only for his goal to be ruled out for an offside against Ansgar Knauff in the build-up. It did not matter. In the 69th minute Uzun raced through midfield and slipped a pass to Ebnoutalib, who finished calmly to make it 3-1 — his sixth goal of the season — as Reuters reported in its match report. The Bundesliga.com report put Frankfurt's expected goals at 2.52 to Hamburg's 1.70, with ten home shots on target.
Hamburg pushed late — Omari struck the crossbar and Otto Stange forced a save from Noah Atubolu — but there was no way back. In a strange footnote, Heuer Fernandes was voted player of the match with 37 percent of the vote despite conceding three times, his string of saves keeping the scoreline respectable.
So What It Means
The win lifts Frankfurt to eighth on 11 points, two behind sixth-placed Leverkusen, and it is a timely response from Adi Hutter's side after last weekend's defeat at Dortmund. For Hamburg, 15th on nine points, this was a second defeat by Frankfurt in five days after their DFB Cup exit to the same opponents — a sobering end to a three-match week for Merlin Polzin's side.
There was also a slice of history. Frankfurt substitute Niko Ilicevic, introduced in stoppage time a day after turning 16, became the joint-youngest player in Bundesliga history, level with former Dortmund forward Youssoufa Moukoko. And for Nigerian fans, a Bundesliga Sunday that ended with Moffi and Onyedika both on the scoresheet was a reminder of how deep the Super Eagles' European talent pool now runs.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Frankfurt's season has flickered without catching fire, but this was the performance of a side that belongs in the European race — front-foot, ruthless after the break, and built around a midfield in which Onyedika is quietly becoming indispensable. Hamburg's fight is real, yet fight alone will not keep them up if they keep handing opponents two-goal head starts in spirit. Do Frankfurt finish in the top six this season?
