Newcastle United have made another major statement on transfer deadline day.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo is officially a Newcastle United player.
The Magpies confirmed the arrival of the 21-year-old Belgium international from Lille on a long-term contract, with Fernandez-Pardo taking the No.20 shirt at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United officially announced the Fernandez-Pardo signing, although the club described the transfer fee as undisclosed. Reuters reports that British media value the deal at approximately £51.4 million.
That is a significant investment in a young forward.
But Newcastle aren’t simply buying Fernandez-Pardo for what he is today.

There is undoubtedly risk involved.
Eight league goals and five assists are impressive numbers for a 21-year-old, but they don’t automatically make someone a £50m Premier League star.
Newcastle are paying partly for potential.
That means patience will be necessary.
Fernandez-Pardo will encounter stronger defenders, faster matches and greater scrutiny in England.
There will probably be inconsistent performances.
But if Newcastle can develop his raw qualities, the calculation changes completely.
A 21-year-old who becomes an elite attacker at 23 or 24 could justify today’s enormous investment.
That’s the gamble Newcastle are taking.
