Paris Saint-Germain have been handed a double fitness boost ahead of Wednesday's Champions League showdown with Manchester City, with Ousmane Dembele and Nuno Mendes both returning to training after extended post-international rest.
Dembele and Mendes back at Campus PSG
Dembele reported back to PSG's Campus training base in Poissy on Saturday, with Mendes following on Sunday, according to L'Equipe. The pair had been rested since Tuesday and sat out Saturday's 3-1 Ligue 1 win over Le Mans as Luis Enrique carefully managed their workloads through the congested autumn calendar. Barring any late setback, both are expected to be available for the trip to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night for matchday two of the Champions League league phase.
Planned rest, not an injury scare
The rest was precautionary rather than enforced, and it was planned well in advance. Dembele featured in all four of France's matches during the international break, while Mendes made four consecutive starts for Portugal in the space of around ten days. PSG announced the extra rest last week, scheduling the duo's returns for Saturday and Sunday respectively — a calculated move to keep two of their most important players fresh for the biggest week of their season so far.
Why it matters for the Etihad showdown
The timing could hardly be better. Wednesday's meeting between the European champions and the Premier League leaders is the standout tie of matchday two, and Enrique's tactical blueprint leans heavily on both returnees: Dembele, the reigning Ballon d'Or holder, for pace and creativity on the right flank, and Mendes for the overlapping threat he provides from left-back. City, fresh from Sunday's 3-0 demolition of Liverpool at Anfield, will arrive in ominous form — but a near-full-strength PSG squad changes the complexion of the tie entirely. The one notable absentee is young midfielder Senny Mayulu, ruled out after suffering a muscle injury while on duty with France's under-21s.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Dembele and Mendes were always the two names PSG fans watched for this weekend — their returns landing exactly on schedule is the best possible news for Luis Enrique before the biggest test of the season so far. City may be flying, but a refreshed Ballon d'Or winner walking back through the door at Poissy is a statement of intent all of its own. Can PSG's rested stars halt City's relentless momentum at the Etihad, or will Maresca's champions keep rolling? Have your say in the comments.
