Barcelona have been handed an injury concern after Raphinha was released from Brazil’s national-team camp following medical tests that detected a small muscular oedema in the back of his right thigh. The decision is precautionary, but his recent fitness history means Barcelona will be monitoring the situation carefully.

Barcelona will be watching Raphinha's condition closely after the Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed that the forward has been released from the national-team squad because of a right-thigh problem.
Raphinha experienced discomfort during Brazil's 4–2 victory over Australia in Brisbane on Tuesday and was replaced by Endrick at half-time. Before leaving the match, he had scored from the penalty spot to bring Brazil level at 2–2. The CBF subsequently confirmed that imaging detected a small muscular oedema in the posterior region of his right thigh.
The important point for Barcelona supporters is that there is currently no confirmed lengthy absence.
Brazil have taken the precautionary decision to release Raphinha rather than risk him in Saturday's friendly against India, and no replacement will be called into Carlo Ancelotti's squad.
Raphinha's Australia Night Ends With an Injury Scare
Brazil's evening in Brisbane had already been eventful.
Vanderson gave Ancelotti's side an early lead before Alessandro Circati and Connor Metcalfe turned the match around for Australia.
Raphinha then stepped forward shortly before half-time.
After Danilo was fouled inside the penalty area, the Barcelona forward converted the resulting penalty to make it 2–2.
But Raphinha did not return for the second half.
Endrick replaced him after the winger complained of discomfort in his right thigh. Brazil recovered without their captain, with Bruno Guimarães and Vinícius Júnior scoring after the break to complete the 4–2 victory.
Raphinha remains crucial for Brazil and Barcelona
The concern increased on Wednesday when medical tests confirmed the muscular oedema.
For Brazil, withdrawing him makes sense.
For Barcelona, the priority is getting one of their most influential attacking players back without turning a relatively minor problem into something more serious.
Why Barcelona Will Be Watching Closely
The location of Raphinha's latest problem is particularly important.
Reuters reports that he missed four matches last season because of a hamstring problem in the same leg, while fitness issues restricted him to 33 club appearances.
However, there is an important distinction.
The CBF has not described the current problem as another hamstring injury. Its official diagnosis is a small muscular oedema in the back of his right thigh.
There is also no official recovery timetable yet.
That means predictions about Raphinha missing several Barcelona matches would currently be speculation.
Raphinha's Incredible Barcelona Form Makes This More Significant
The timing is frustrating for Barcelona because Raphinha has been one of their outstanding players during the opening weeks of the season.
Only recently, the Brazilian produced another spectacular individual performance by scoring all three goals as Barcelona came from behind to beat Sevilla 3–1.
That performance even prompted questions about his omission from the 2026 Ballon d'Or shortlist.
Beyond the Final Whistle examined that debate in our Raphinha Ballon d'Or analysis, after his remarkable hat-trick against Sevilla.
His influence under Hansi Flick extends beyond individual performances.
Raphinha's movement into central areas, willingness to attack space behind defenders and increasingly ruthless finishing have helped transform Barcelona into one of Europe's most dangerous attacking teams.
We explored those tactical changes in our analysis of Barcelona's record-breaking start under Hansi Flick, where Raphinha's goals and movement were central to Barça's extraordinary attacking numbers.
That is why even a relatively minor fitness concern deserves attention.
Barcelona do have considerable attacking talent, but replacing Raphinha's combination of movement, goals, pressing and experience is not straightforward.
Brazil Choose Caution Before India Friendly
There is little incentive for Ancelotti to gamble with Raphinha's fitness.
Brazil's next match is a friendly against India in Kolkata on October 3. With no competitive points at stake, protecting the forward is the logical decision.
Raphinha had already made an impact during Brazil's Australian tour.
In the first meeting with Australia, his delivery created Rayan's stoppage-time equaliser in a 1–1 draw. In the second, he scored the penalty that brought Brazil back into the contest before his withdrawal.
The international break therefore demonstrated his importance to Ancelotti even though it ended prematurely.
No Reason for Barcelona to Panic Yet
Barcelona supporters will naturally be concerned, particularly because Raphinha has previously experienced problems with the same leg.
But the information available so far does not justify assuming the worst.
The CBF detected the problem early and removed him from an international friendly rather than allowing him to continue playing.
Barcelona's medical staff can now assess him when he returns to the club.
Until that examination provides more information, the most accurate description is straightforward:
Raphinha has suffered an injury scare, not a confirmed long-term injury.
For Flick, the hope will be that Brazil's cautious approach allows one of his most important players to recover without a significant interruption to his outstanding start to the season.
Beyond the Final Whistle, Raphinha's withdrawal is a genuine concern for Barcelona because of his outstanding form and previous fitness problems in the same leg. But with the CBF describing the issue as a small muscular oedema and taking immediate precautions, there is no reason yet to assume a lengthy absence. Barcelona's assessment should provide the next important update.
