Paris Saint-Germain did not just beat Villarreal on Tuesday night — they rewrote the Champions League record book inside 17 minutes. The holders scored four times in 16 minutes and two seconds, the fastest any team has ever reached four goals in this competition, and went on to win 6-0 at La Ceramica to make it four wins from four in the league phase.
This was supposed to be a test of PSG's depth. Luis Enrique travelled to Spain without Ousmane Dembele, Marquinhos and Nuno Mendes, all out with thigh injuries, and without long-term absentee Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Instead, the squad players produced the most devastating opening spell the Champions League has ever seen.
Four goals, eight minutes, one record
Joao Neves opened the scoring in the ninth minute, poking home a loose ball after missing the initial corner. Desire Doue doubled the lead in the 12th minute, punishing a shocking error by the Villarreal goalkeeper, and Senny Mayulu added a third less than a minute after the restart of play. When Fabian Ruiz slammed home the fourth in the 17th minute, the clock read 16 minutes and two seconds — a new record, as Reuters confirmed via Opta.
The previous mark had stood since 2011, when Real Madrid needed 20 minutes to score four against Dinamo Zagreb. As Sports Mole noted, three of PSG's four goals came from Villarreal mistakes — playing out from the back, or being dispossessed in their own half — but the pressing that forced those errors was relentless. The hosts, who had actually started brightly with a couple of early corners, were whistled off at half-time by their own fans.
Ruiz struck again five minutes after the break, finishing left-footed from a Vitinha assist to make it five, and substitute David Boly completed the rout in the 78th minute from a Neves pass. PSG, already the competition's top scorers with 14 goals before kick-off, now have 20 from four games — and a perfect 12 points, on a night when Galatasaray also won in the early kick-off.
So what does it mean?
For PSG, this was a statement that the machine does not depend on its biggest names. With Dembele and Kvaratskhelia out, the goals were shared between midfielders Neves and Ruiz, young forwards Doue and Mayulu, and a substitute in Boly — the depth Luis Enrique has built is now the story of this league phase. Four straight wins all but guarantee a place in the knockout rounds, and the holders look like the team everyone will want to avoid in the spring.
For Villarreal, the damage is both mathematical and psychological. A third defeat in four games leaves them on three points and fighting for a play-off place, and a home crowd does not forget being 4-0 down in 17 minutes. How a side plays out from the back against an elite press will be asked about for weeks — just as Barcelona, who faced Villa tonight, have learned that one bad spell in this format can define a campaign.
Beyond the Final Whistle: This is what a champion looks like when it is annoyed. PSG arrived in Spain missing four stars and produced the fastest four-goal start in Champions League history — not with galacticos, but with a system so well drilled that the replacements looked like the first choice. Europe has been warned, again: the holders are not defending this trophy, they are hunting it.
Is this PSG side even better than the one that won the Champions League last season? Let us know in the comments.
