Bayern Munich have responded to their injury crisis by adding three Campus youngsters — Jannis Bärtl, Erblin Osmani and Noah Codjo-Evora — to their Champions League squad via the B list ahead of tonight's league-phase clash with Atletico Madrid, with five senior regulars ruled out and both Manuel Neuer and Michael Olise facing late calls on whether they can start.
The additions, confirmed on UEFA's official squad list and reported by LiveScore, make the three academy talents eligible for selection for the rest of the league phase. None of the trio made tonight's final matchday squad, but there was one surprise name who did: Tim Binder, another B-list player, has been included for the trip to Madrid.
Five Regulars Missing in Madrid
Bayern travel without Jamal Musiala, who has torn a muscle fibre, and Luis Díaz, who has a torn muscle bundle in his hamstring. Serge Gnabry is out with a muscle injury, Ismael Saibari is recovering from a torn syndesmosis ligament, and Bara Ndiaye is sidelined after an appendix operation.
It is the same treatment room that has defined Bayern's season in Europe, and it has already shaped this fixture once: BTFW's look at the injury crisis that has followed Vincent Kompany's side into this matchday showed a squad stretched to its limit even before tonight. Kompany himself remains away ill, so assistant Aaron Danks again leads the team, exactly as he did in Saturday's top-of-the-table Bundesliga clash with Borussia Dortmund.
Neuer and Olise: Available, But How Available?
The better news for Bayern is who did travel. Neuer, out with a foot injury, completed his first full session with the team on Monday and flew to Madrid. Olise, taken off as a precaution against Dortmund, is also in the squad.
Whether either starts is another matter. "We just need to see whether they are ready to start or whether they will come off the bench," Danks said in Madrid on Monday evening, in quotes carried in FC Bayern's official preview of the match. Sporting director Max Eberl was just as cautious about Olise: "It is positive that he is there, because he is an outstanding player who is always an asset to us. But we will also avoid the risk of it becoming a longer-term injury."
Danks has still not settled the goalkeeping call between Neuer and Jonas Urbig, and with Saibari and Gnabry both out, the number ten role behind Harry Kane — who needs one more goal to match a Cristiano Ronaldo Champions League record tonight — is wide open.
So What: 14th Place and No Margin Left
This is where the B-list paperwork stops being administrative and starts being strategic. Bayern are unbeaten after three matches, but draws with Arsenal and Viking FK have left them 14th in the league-phase table on five points — outside the top eight that go straight into the round of 16, and with four matches left to fix it.
Atletico away is the hardest kind of fixture to absorb with a patched-up squad: Diego Simeone's side defend in numbers, break with precision and punish exactly the kind of makeshift midfield Bayern may have to field. A point in Madrid would keep Bayern in the play-off places with winnable games to come; a defeat, with Musiala, Díaz and Gnabry still weeks away, would leave the top eight looking a long way off and pile even more onto Kane's shoulders.
Beyond the Final Whistle: Registering three teenagers hours before a Champions League night in Madrid tells you everything about where Bayern are — this is no longer an injury list, it is a season being held together by the Campus. Danks does not need a famous win tonight; he needs Neuer or Olise to survive 90 minutes, Kane to keep scoring, and no new name added to that treatment-room list. Anything more is a bonus Bayern's squad, as it stands, simply cannot promise.
