Galatasaray lead unbeaten Stuttgart 2-0 at half-time at Rams Park, Aleksey Batrakov scoring twice in three breathtaking minutes to stun the only German club in the Champions League's automatic qualification places.
After a minute's silence for Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel, the Matchday 4 tie exploded into life almost immediately — and by the quarter-hour mark, Okan Buruk's side had a grip on a game Stuttgart arrived in Istanbul expecting to control.
Three minutes that shook Rams Park
Stuttgart actually came closest first. On eight minutes Jamie Leweling met Maximilian Mittelstädt's cross first time and steered the ball back across goal onto the inside of the left post, then the inside of the right post, before it somehow bounced out. It was the escape of the season — and Galatasaray punished it ruthlessly.
On 12 minutes an intricate move sent Roland Sallai to the byline, his cross reached the far post and Jeff Chabot's attempted clearance dropped straight to Batrakov, who smashed it into the top right corner without hesitation, as the Bundesliga.com liveticker recorded. Three minutes later Davinson Sánchez launched him down the right and the 21-year-old Russian burst into the box and threaded a low shot through Fabian Bredlow's legs for 2-0.
The brace continues a dream first European campaign for Batrakov in the side Buruk named in our lineups piece — an unchanged XI from the 2-1 derby win over Fenerbahçe — and it came with Victor Osimhen still hunting his own milestone: the Nigerian, on eight Champions League goals for the club, had four first-half shots, saw one saved on 44 minutes and was denied a one-on-one by Ramon Hendriks' desperate block.
Stuttgart stunned, hurt — but not out of it
Sebastian Hoeneß's night unravelled in layers. Captain Atakan Karazor was booked inside two minutes for a late challenge on Mario Lemina, then could not continue from the knock he took in the incident and was replaced by 19-year-old Yanik Spalt on 18 minutes — who was himself booked in stoppage time for a late challenge on Batrakov.
Yet the visitors are not dead. The numbers at the break — possession 59-41 to Galatasaray, shots 7-6, but crucially shots on target 4-0 — tell the story of a Stuttgart side creating openings and finishing none of them. Leweling volleyed over from Chris Führich's cross, Lucas Torreira blocked a cutback bound for joint-top scorer Ermedin Demirović, who has four league-phase goals but barely had a sight of goal, and Führich bent another effort just wide late in the half. The live coverage on TNT Sports has carried the same theme: Stuttgart punished for the one spell in which they switched off.
In the night's other early game, Shakhtar Donetsk and Sporting CP are goalless at half-time at Stamford Bridge.
So what does it mean?
As it stands, Galatasaray climb to six points and deepen their hold on a play-off place, a second straight European win after the 4-2 victory in Lille that followed defeats by Sporting and Barcelona — the same momentum that powered their derby triumph last month. Stuttgart, unbeaten on seven points, would stay in the top eight on goal difference for now, but a first defeat — and a two-goal hole with 45 minutes to climb out of — would hand the initiative to the chasing pack in tonight's late games, including Barcelona against Aston Villa and Manchester United against Roma.
Hoeneß has Tiago Tomás and Deniz Undav already on the pitch as routes back; Buruk's question is whether to protect what he has or let Osimhen chase the record in an open second half.
Beyond the Final Whistle: This is why Rams Park remains one of European football's great ambush grounds. Stuttgart are a better side than the scoreline suggests — they hit both posts before Galatasaray scored — but Batrakov's three minutes were a lesson in what this competition actually rewards: the team that takes its moment, twice, without blinking. If Galatasaray see this out, the play-off places have a new favourite, and Europe has a new young name to learn. Can Stuttgart find two goals in Istanbul, or is this tie already gone?
