Gotham FC finally have the one trophy that had always escaped them. Goals from Guro Reiten and substitute Jaedyn Shaw gave the defending champions a 2-0 win over the Utah Royals on Decision Day at Sports Illustrated Stadium, sealing the first NWSL Shield in the club's history and the No. 1 seed for the playoffs.
Gotham knew a win or a draw in Harrison would be enough, with San Diego Wave three points behind at kickoff on a day when all 16 teams played simultaneously. They never left it to chance. Nine minutes in, Midge Purce drove down the right past Nuria Rabano and fired a low cross into a crowded box; the ball deflected through to the back post, where Reiten beat her marker and finished left-footed for her eighth goal contribution of the season.
The one shadow on the afternoon came on 20 minutes, when midfielder Jaelin Howell went down with a non-contact injury and had to be helped off, replaced by Savannah McCaskill three minutes later. The club later confirmed a right ankle injury, and Howell was seen in a walking boot after the match — a worry Juan Carlos Amoros could have done without a week before the playoffs.
Purce Creates Again as Shaw Seals It
Utah, already assured of the first playoff berth in their history, competed well but produced only one shot after half-time. Gotham's bench decided it. Shaw and Rose Lavelle, both held out of the October 25 win at Orlando, were named among the substitutes; Shaw replaced Tess Boade on the hour and missed narrowly wide on 68 minutes before making the game safe ten minutes from time. Lavelle spread play out to Purce, Purce cut onto her left foot and crossed, and Shaw needed only the slightest touch to guide the ball past Maddy McGlynn for 2-0, as first reported by TSN.
Behind them, Ann-Katrin Berger made two saves for her 11th clean sheet of the season. "This was obviously amazing to win the shield," Shaw said. "We are so happy to finally achieve this." For Mandy Freeman, the club's longest-serving player after ten years at Gotham, lifting it in front of the home supporters meant everything: sharing the moment with the fans who, in her words, have held it down for the team was an amazing moment.
Decision Day Drama Elsewhere
The rest of the bracket fell into place around them. Seattle Reign grabbed the final playoff spot and the No. 8 seed, Jordyn Bugg heading the winner from a corner on 68 minutes in a 1-0 win over Orlando Pride — their reward is a trip to Gotham next Sunday. San Diego locked up the No. 2 seed by winning 1-0 at Bay FC through Mimi Van Zanten's ninth-minute strike and will host Utah on Friday night in the Royals' first-ever playoff match.
Washington Spirit took the No. 3 seed by beating Chicago Stars 2-0, Trinity Rodman scoring her 12th of the season late on, and they host Portland Thorns. Kansas City Current beat Racing Louisville 2-0 to finish fourth and face Angel City, while North Carolina Courage beat Denver Summit 1-0 through a stoppage-time own goal yet still missed the playoffs by two points — even as their forward Ashley Sanchez took the Golden Boot with 20 goals, tying the single-season record Temwa Chawinga set in 2024. It was also a landmark weekend across the Atlantic, where Manchester City Women went top of the WSL.
So What: One Trophy From a Historic Treble
Gotham finish the longest regular season in league history — 30 games — on 61 points as the clear No. 1 seed, with home advantage throughout the playoffs. The quarter-finals run from November 6 to 8, and the championship game is set for November 21 at Audi Field, as USA TODAY's bracket breakdown confirms. Twelve months ago Gotham won the title as a No. 8 seed; this time everyone has to go through them.
The bigger prize is history. Gotham have already won the Challenge Cup this season and lifted the NWSL Championship in 2023 and 2025. Add the championship again this month and they become the first club to complete a domestic treble in a single NWSL season — with the 2027 World Cup in Brazil looming over every playoff performance from their internationals. Howell's ankle is the one immediate concern; everything else about this squad, from Berger's clean sheets to a bench that can introduce Shaw and Lavelle, looks built for November.
Beyond the Final Whistle: The Shield is the truest measure of a team — 30 games, no hiding place — and Gotham have paired it with the swagger of reigning champions. The verdict here is simple: this is now the most complete side in the NWSL, and the treble is theirs to lose. Can anyone stop Gotham completing the treble — or is the championship already heading back to Harrison? Tell us in the comments.
