Barcelona have been handed a double boost at exactly the right moment, with Raphinha and Frenkie de Jong both fit again for Saturday's trip to Real Betis — the first stop in a week that also takes in Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and the first Clasico of the season.
Raphinha has missed Barcelona's last two matches, wins over Getafe and Galatasaray, after picking up a hamstring problem while on international duty with Brazil. The 29-year-old returned to full training on Thursday, and Hansi Flick confirmed on Friday that he is available again, as ESPN reported from the coach's press conference.
The numbers explain why his return matters so much. Playing in a more central striking role this season, Raphinha had scored 14 goals in eight appearances before the injury — the most explosive start of his Barcelona career, and the form that underpinned the new long-term contract he signed with the club.
Flick will not rush his match-winner
Flick made clear, though, that availability does not mean ninety minutes. With Betis away, PSG away and Real Madrid at home arriving in the space of eight days, the German intends to build Raphinha's minutes up gradually rather than throw him straight back into a full match.
That caution has history behind it. Raphinha missed long stretches last season with similar hamstring trouble, and Barcelona felt his absence in their pressing and their intensity without the ball. Flick's staff are determined not to trade one comeback for another lay-off, so a start at Betis followed by a carefully judged role in Paris is the likeliest pattern — with the Clasico, five days after PSG, the game everyone at the club really wants him peaking for.
De Jong back for the first time this season
The second return is arguably the bigger structural one. Frenkie de Jong has not played a single minute this season after suffering a knee injury during the World Cup, and Flick confirmed the Dutch midfielder is also ready to feature at Betis, according to theScore.
De Jong's comeback restores the conductor Barcelona's midfield has lacked. His ability to take the ball under pressure and set the tempo is the foundation the rest of Flick's system is built on — something BTFW examined when the Dutchman's influence on this side was last in focus in our De Jong feature. Like Raphinha, he will be eased in with limited minutes at first.
Their returns also ease the load on Lamine Yamal. The teenager has started every game for club and country this season, and Flick admitted his minutes need managing too — something that only becomes possible once the senior options around him are fit again. With both men back, Barcelona are close to a fully fit squad, with only Roony Bardghji and Andreas Christensen still sidelined.
So what does it mean for the week ahead?
This is where the returns become a genuine dilemma rather than a simple boost. Betis, in third place, are no gentle reintroduction — Barcelona's perfect record this season will be tested in Seville whether Raphinha starts or not. Then comes the hardest away night in Europe, against the back-to-back European champions in Paris, and then a Clasico that could shape the early title race.
Flick therefore has to solve three problems with the same two players: win at Betis, compete in Paris, and have his best side fresh for Madrid. Undercook their returns and Barcelona risk arriving at the Clasico undercooked; overcook them and one tight hamstring could wreck the month. Expect short, sharp cameos on Saturday, bigger roles on Tuesday, and everything pointed at next weekend.
Beyond the Final Whistle: this is the week that tells us whether Barcelona's perfect start is real. A fully fit Raphinha is the most dangerous wide forward in Spain right now, and a fit De Jong is the player who makes Flick's whole machine run — but titles in October are won by squads, not by rushing stars back. If Flick's minute-management works, Barcelona come out of this week top of everything and favourites for the Clasico. If it fails, the same questions about depth that followed them last season will be back within days.
Can Barcelona survive Betis, PSG and El Clasico unbeaten with their two returning stars on managed minutes? Let us know in the comments.
