William Saliba is back in an Arsenal matchday squad for the first time this season, named on the bench for tonight's Champions League trip to Slavia Prague, while Viktor Gyokeres returns to lead the line as Mikel Arteta makes six changes from Sunday's 1-0 win at Liverpool.
The confirmed teams were published by Arsenal Station and 101 Great Goals ahead of the 8pm kick-off at the Eden Arena, with Declan Rice captaining a rotated Gunners side that still carries more than enough quality to take control of their league-phase campaign.
Saliba back, but Konsa keeps his place
Saliba has missed the entire season so far with a back injury, but Arteta confirmed before the game that the Frenchman is ready again after playing 45 minutes in a behind-closed-doors friendly last week.
"He's in a really good place," Arteta said. "He feels very comfortable. He played 45 minutes behind closed doors last week and he feels ready to go. So whether we use him or not now is a matter of what the team needs."
For now, the team needs Ezri Konsa. The summer signing keeps his place alongside Gabriel Magalhaes in the centre of defence, with Ben White returning at right-back in place of Jurrien Timber and Piero Hincapie recalled on the left ahead of Riccardo Calafiori. All three of Saliba, Timber and Calafiori are on a strong bench.
Six changes after the Anfield heroics
Arteta has used the trip to Prague to freshen up the side that went top of the Premier League at Anfield. Martin Zubimendi makes only his third start of the season alongside Rice, Mikel Merino is recalled with Martin Odegaard rested to the bench, and Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze flank Gyokeres, who replaces Kai Havertz up front.
Bukayo Saka remains out with the quadriceps injury he picked up against Bayern Munich, while Max Dowman is among the substitutes. The teenager is serving a three-match domestic ban after the FA rejected Arsenal's appeal against his Fleetwood red card, but that suspension does not apply in Europe — Dowman is free to feature in Prague tonight.
Arsenal XI: Raya; White, Konsa, Gabriel, Hincapie; Zubimendi, Rice; Madueke, Merino, Eze; Gyokeres. Subs: Arrizabalaga, Meslier, Timber, Calafiori, Saliba, Mosquera, Lewis-Skelly, Guimaraes, Odegaard, Tzolis, Dowman, Havertz.
Slavia, the Czech league leaders, are 32nd in the Champions League table with one point from three games and are missing four first-team regulars, with giant striker Tomas Chory frozen out by coach Jindrich Trpisovsky.
Slavia XI: Domchak; Vlcek, Holes, Zima, Kubiak; Moses, Sadilek, Suleiman; Ayaosi, Nowak, Sturm.
So what does it mean?
A win tonight takes Arsenal to 10 points from four games and puts one foot in the knockout rounds, in a week when the league phase has already been shaken up — Barcelona ended Aston Villa's perfect start on Tuesday, and Fenerbahce beat Liverpool in Istanbul in tonight's early game, a reminder that nobody's place in the top eight is safe.
For Saliba, even 20 minutes off the bench would change Arsenal's season. Arteta has defended superbly without him — seven points from Napoli, Lille and Bayern is no accident — but a fit Saliba alongside Gabriel and Konsa gives Arsenal arguably the strongest centre-back rotation in Europe for the winter grind ahead.
For Slavia, winless in 18 European matches, anything but a win leaves their campaign close to over by the halfway stage.
Beyond the Final Whistle: This is what a squad built to win the Champions League looks like — six changes, a returning world-class centre-back held in reserve, and still a starting XI that should win comfortably in Prague. If Gyokeres takes his chance tonight, Arteta's rotation stops being a risk and becomes Arsenal's biggest weapon. Should Saliba start the next league game if he comes through tonight unscathed?
