Manchester United could be facing a major battle to keep one of the brightest young talents in their academy.
JJ Gabriel, the highly rated 15-year-old forward, has asked to leave Manchester United and requested the cancellation of his youth registration as he seeks to become a free agent.
The development comes during an already difficult period at Old Trafford. United recently suffered a dramatic 3–2 Carabao Cup defeat to Brighton after surrendering a two-goal lead, while their early-season performances have placed Michael Carrick's team under increasing scrutiny.

Now the club has another problem to solve — and this one concerns a player who has not even turned 16.
According to Sky Sports, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, along with several Premier League clubs, are interested in Gabriel.
Why Does JJ Gabriel Want to Leave Manchester United?
Gabriel's desire to leave appears to be connected partly to his pathway towards senior football.
Sky Sports reports that Gabriel and his representatives believe Manchester United had opportunities to involve him more during preseason and in first-team squads since the campaign began.
Gabriel did receive a taste of senior football during the summer, making an eight-minute first-team appearance against Atlético Madrid.
He had also trained with United's senior players and met former head coach Ruben Amorim as well as Sir Alex Ferguson as the club attempted to demonstrate that a pathway existed between the academy and first team.
But Gabriel has nevertheless decided that he wants to leave.
United have not given up on keeping him. Club officials are expected to continue discussions with the youngster, his family and representatives in an attempt to resolve the situation.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Are Watching
The calibre of clubs interested in Gabriel demonstrates how highly the teenager is regarded.
Sky Sports names Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern Munich, as well as Premier League clubs, among the teams monitoring his situation.
The Guardian has separately reported that Real Madrid are prominent among his suitors and that Gabriel is believed to favour continuing his development in continental Europe.
That does not mean Gabriel has agreed to join Real Madrid or any other club.
There is an important difference between clubs showing interest and an agreement being reached, especially with a player this young.
But Real Madrid and Barcelona's presence makes this one of the most interesting youth-transfer situations in European football.
Barcelona's interest is particularly noteworthy at a time when the club continues to place enormous faith in young players. Lamine Yamal's emergence has made Barcelona's youth pathway one of the biggest stories in football, and he is now among the leading names in the 2026 Ballon d'Or race.
Why Is JJ Gabriel So Highly Rated?
Gabriel's youth-level performances explain why Europe's elite are paying attention.
The teenager became the youngest winner of Manchester United's Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award after scoring more than 20 goals for United's U18 side last season.
His development has continued this campaign.
Gabriel scored a hat-trick against Sabah in the UEFA Youth League and has also registered two goals and two assists in Premier League 2.
Those numbers are particularly impressive considering his age.
For United, losing a prospect producing at that level would be significant.
The club has traditionally taken enormous pride in developing young players, and Gabriel had appeared to be another potential graduate capable of eventually making the transition to the senior team.
Gabriel's Age Makes the Transfer Situation Complicated
This is not a conventional transfer.
Gabriel turns 16 on October 6.
He cannot sign a scholarship agreement until then and cannot sign a professional contract until he turns 17.
There are also specific rules governing the cancellation of his current youth registration.
Sky Sports reports that under Premier League rules, a youth registration can only be cancelled when the club, player and parent or carer agree.
If those parties cannot reach an agreement, the Premier League can make a binding decision.
Therefore, Gabriel asking Manchester United to cancel his registration does not automatically make him a free agent.
The discussions taking place over the coming weeks could consequently determine whether United can repair the relationship or whether one of Europe's biggest clubs eventually gets an opportunity to sign him.
Michael Carrick Calls for Caution
Michael Carrick has understandably been careful when discussing the situation publicly.
The Manchester United head coach stressed that Gabriel remains only 15 and that protecting his welfare should be more important than turning his future into a major transfer spectacle.
Carrick told Sky Sports that those discussing the situation need to remember Gabriel is still a child and be conscious of the exposure surrounding him.
That is an important perspective.
Gabriel may be one of Europe's most exciting teenage footballers, but he is still at an extremely early stage of his career.
Manchester United therefore have to balance their desire to retain a valuable academy prospect with their responsibility for his development and wellbeing.

Manchester United's immediate objective will be to convince Gabriel and his family to reconsider.
As long as his registration remains with the club, United still have an opportunity to repair the relationship.
But Europe's biggest clubs will continue watching.
Real Madrid's reported interest makes the Spanish giants particularly significant, while Barcelona, Bayern Munich and PSG all have extensive experience recruiting elite young talent.
Gabriel therefore faces an enormous decision remarkably early in his career.
Staying at Manchester United could eventually give him an opportunity to follow one of football's most famous academy pathways.
Leaving could open the door to Real Madrid, Barcelona or another European powerhouse before he even turns 16.
Whatever happens next, the story is unlikely to disappear quickly.
